Adani Power Dips After Yesterday’s Rally As Profit Booking Cools Momentum

Mumbai, April 17: Shares of Adani Power edged lower by about 0.82 per cent at Rs 191.60 on Friday, a day after the stock surged nearly 5 per cent, as investors locked in gains amid a muted broader market.
Profit Booking
The mild decline appears to be a classic case of profit booking following a sharp upmove in the previous session. Adani Power had rallied strongly on Thursday, riding a wave of buying interest across group stocks and optimism around power demand.
Such quick pullbacks after steep gains are not uncommon, especially in high-beta counters like Adani Power, where traders tend to book profits swiftly after short-term rallies.
Demand Tailwind
The earlier surge in the stock was largely driven by expectations of rising electricity demand as India heads into peak summer months. Thermal power producers like Adani Power are typically key beneficiaries of increased consumption, given their ability to supply base load power.
This demand-driven optimism has been a recurring theme in the power sector, with investors positioning for higher utilisation levels and improved realisations in the coming months.
Momentum Pause
Friday’s dip suggests that the rally may be taking a breather rather than reversing. The stock has seen strong momentum in recent sessions and remains in an uptrend over the short term, even as intraday moves turn volatile. To be sure, the stock has risen around 29 per cent this year, outperforming Nifty Next 50 by a huge margin, which has just edged up 0.35% during the period.
Market participants often rotate positions within the sector, leading to intermittent corrections even within broader uptrends.
Muted Markets
The decline also comes against the backdrop of a subdued broader market, where benchmark indices opened flat amid mixed global cues and stock-specific pressures.
In such an environment, even fundamentally positive sectors tend to see tempered moves, with traders preferring to reduce risk and lock in recent gains.
Sector Trend
The broader power sector continues to witness selective buying, with stocks reacting more to individual triggers rather than moving in tandem. While some players continue to attract interest on demand optimism, others have seen mild corrections, signalling a more stock-specific approach by investors.
Near-Term View
For now, Adani Power’s slight dip does little to dent the underlying narrative of strong summer demand and sectoral tailwinds.
Instead, it highlights a familiar market rhythm: sharp rallies followed by brief pauses. As long as demand expectations hold, the broader trend for power stocks may remain constructive—but with bouts of volatility along the way.
