New Delhi, October 14: NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL) has signed a strategic partnership with NTT DATA Japan to enable acceptance of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Japan, allowing Indian tourists to instantly pay through QR at merchant locations using their chosen UPI apps.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) states that the alliance will facilitate smooth transactions at NTT DATA-acquired merchant outlets, optimizing the overall digital payment experience for tourists in India.
UPI to Be Accepted Across NTT DATA Merchant Network
An MoU has been established to facilitate UPI acceptance at merchant outlets acquired by NTT DATA in Japan. NTT DATA runs CAFIS®, Japan’s largest card payment processing network, and this partnership will be a crucial step toward bringing India’s real-time payment infrastructure to one of the most developed economies in Asia.
Enhancement For Cross-Border Digital Payments
Together with NTT DATA Japan, NIPL will investigate and provide solutions for UPI-based transactions, allowing visitors from India to pay Japanese merchants in a straightforward, safe, and familiar way during their time in Japan.
Data indicates that from January to August 2025, 2.08 lakh or over 208,371 Indian tourists entered Japan, marking a 36% increase in visitor rates compared to the same span in 2024. The data indicates an increase in the flow of travel, indicating the necessity of interoperable and efficient payment systems between India and Japan.
Enhancing The India-Japan Fintech Partnership
On the matter, Ritesh Shukla, MD & CEO of NIPL, noted that this MoU with NTT DATA is a key milestone towards resolving cross-border payments. “This partnership supports our efforts to enable UPI acceptance in Japan and improve the digital payments experience for Indian travelers to Japan,” Shukla said.
This initiative aligns with NPCI International’s overarching plan to globalize UPI, making Indian payment systems ubiquitous on the global travel circuit in the near future.
