Mumbai, May 27: Silver prices in India were broadly unchanged on Wednesday, with the national benchmark rate holding firm at ₹285 per gram or ₹2,850 per 10 grams and ₹2,85,000 per kilogram for the third consecutive session. The only movement of note came from the southern premium cities Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala each of which eased by ₹50 per 10 grams to ₹2,900 from Tuesday’s ₹2,950, narrowing the premium over the national benchmark from ₹100 to ₹50 per 10 grams.
Most other major cities remained locked at the national benchmark level, with Bangalore the sole outlier, ticking up a token ₹1 per 10 grams to ₹2,850 from Tuesday’s anomalous ₹2,849 reading. Wednesday’s session underscores the settled, consolidation-driven character of the silver market after the sharp post-tariff volatility of the previous fortnight.
The narrowing of the southern premium is the most notable development of the day and warrants attention. Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala have maintained a premium over the national benchmark in every session since the post-tariff correction began, with that premium oscillating between ₹50 and ₹150 per 10 grams depending on the strength of local demand.
Wednesday’s reduction to ₹50 suggests that some of the demand tailwind from those markets driven by jewellery and temple silverware activity is beginning to moderate as consumers in these cities, too, adjust their buying behaviour to the higher price environment created by the 15 per cent import duty. If the southern premium narrows further in coming sessions, it would signal a convergence toward national benchmark rates and a further flattening of the city-wise dispersion that has characterised domestic silver pricing since mid-May.
Domestic silver prices continue to take their primary cue from international spot rates and the movement of the rupee against the US dollar. A weaker rupee tends to amplify any uptick in global prices for Indian buyers, while a firmer rupee can cushion the impact of international price strength. This currency-transmission mechanism means that even when global silver is range-bound as it broadly has been over the past week the domestic market can experience modest day-to-day fluctuations driven purely by the exchange rate.
City-Wise Rates: Wednesday vs Tuesday
Among India’s major cities, Wednesday’s most significant development was the ₹50 easing in Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala from ₹2,950 to ₹2,900 per 10 grams, bringing these markets closer to the national benchmark without fully closing the gap. Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Pune, Vadodara and Ahmedabad remained at ₹2,850 per 10 grams unchanged from Tuesday while Bangalore quietly normalised back to ₹2,850 from its Tuesday reading of ₹2,849, closing out the fractional anomaly that had set it marginally below the benchmark.
The revised gap between the southern premium cities and the national benchmark of ₹50 per 10 grams is the narrowest it has been since the post-tariff correction began, suggesting that regional demand differentials are gradually converging as the market matures into its new post-duty pricing structure.
Gold Prices on Wednesday
Gold prices in India fell for a third consecutive session on Wednesday, with the national price of 24-karat gold slipping to ₹1,58,290 per 10 grams down ₹600 from Tuesday’s ₹1,58,890 as selling pressure continued to build amid a firming US dollar and some easing of global risk-off sentiment.
The 22-karat rate eased to ₹1,45,100 per 10 grams (down ₹550) and 18-karat gold declined to ₹1,18,720 per 10 grams (down ₹450), with per-gram rates now standing at ₹15,829, ₹14,510 and ₹11,872 respectively. The three-session cumulative decline in 24K gold now stands at ₹1,090 per 10 grams from last Friday’s close, with Wednesday’s ₹600 fall the steepest of the three sessions.
