Mumbai, May 27: Gold prices in India slipped for a third consecutive session on Wednesday, with the pace of the decline accelerating modestly as selling pressure persisted across global and domestic markets.
The national price of 24-karat gold (99.9% purity) fell to ₹1,58,290 per 10 grams, shedding ₹600 from Tuesday’s ₹1,58,890. The 22-karat rate (91.6% purity) declined to ₹1,45,100 per 10 grams, down ₹550 from Tuesday’s ₹1,45,650. The 18-karat price (75% purity) eased to ₹1,18,720 per 10 grams, retreating ₹450 from Tuesday’s ₹1,19,170. On a per-gram basis, 24K gold now stands at ₹15,829, 22K at ₹14,510 and 18K at ₹11,872.
Wednesday’s ₹600 fall in 24K is larger than Tuesday’s ₹490 decline and significantly steeper than Monday’s ₹110 slip, pointing to a gradual build-up of selling pressure over the three-session correction. The cumulative three-session decline now stands at ₹1,090 per 10 grams in 24K from last Friday’s close of ₹1,59,380, erasing nearly a third of the ₹3,710 recovered during the preceding three-session rally.
The metal has been caught between two competing forces: a persistent geopolitical risk premium tied to the ongoing West Asia conflict, which continues to support safe-haven demand, and a firming US dollar along with easing ceasefire concerns that have reduced the urgency of that safe-haven bid. Domestically, the cumulative impact of four fuel price hikes since May 15 which have added nearly ₹7.40 per litre to both petrol and diesel — is feeding through into broader inflationary anxiety that is suppressing discretionary spending, including on gold jewellery and coins.
City-Wise Gold Rates: Southern and Western India
Chennai saw the sharpest city-level decline on Wednesday, with 24-karat gold falling ₹870 per 10 grams to ₹1,59,820, 22-karat dropping ₹800 to ₹1,46,500 and 18-karat easing ₹700 to ₹1,22,900 from Tuesday’s levels — a steeper correction than the national benchmark that may reflect some unwinding of the premium demand that has consistently kept the city above other markets. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune were all uniformly pegged at the national benchmark of ₹1,58,290 for 24-karat, ₹1,45,100 for 22-karat and ₹1,18,720 for 18-karat gold per 10 grams, each declining by ₹600, ₹550 and ₹450 from Tuesday’s close.
Delhi quoted 24-karat gold at ₹1,58,440 per 10 grams, 22-karat at ₹1,45,250 and 18-karat at ₹1,18,870 on Wednesday, each declining by ₹600, ₹550 and ₹450 respectively from Tuesday’s levels, maintaining the capital’s characteristic slim premium above the national benchmark. Vadodara and Ahmedabad were both quoted at ₹1,58,340 for 24-karat, ₹1,45,150 for 22-karat and ₹1,18,770 for 18-karat gold per 10 grams, also down ₹600, ₹550 and ₹450 from Tuesday in line with the national benchmark cities. The broad uniformity of Wednesday’s declines across benchmark cities — with Chennai as the sole outlier on the steeper side — confirms that the correction continues to be driven by macro forces rather than any city-level demand or supply dynamic.
