Mumbai, September 15, 2025 – Vodafone Idea Ltd (NSE: IDEA) shares gained 7.18% in closing trade following the Supreme Court placing the firm’s plea against the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) new Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) demand on September 19 for hearing on a tentative basis. The news spurred high-level investor activity, mirroring expectations of regulatory clarity to the long-pending AGR issue.
AGR Dispute and Listing in Supreme Court
Vodafone Idea has challenged DoT’s supplemental AGR demand of ₹9,450 crore, stating that it is beyond the purview of the Supreme Court’s 2019 judgment on AGR dues. Of the amount under challenge, ₹2,774 crore pertains to FY18–19 dues of the post-merger entity and ₹5,675 crore pertains to pre-merger Vodafone Group dues. The company has asked for recalculation, saying that some numbers were repeated. In its affidavit, the DoT asserted that the additional demand stemmed from an accounting deficit not addressed by the previous judgment.
Market Snapshot and Stock Movement
Investor mood turned optimistic as the shares of Vodafone Idea touched the intraday high of ₹8.38 before settling at ₹8.21. The counter had strong participation, with 10,411.82 lakh shares traded and turnover of ₹836.07 crore. The stock has gained around 25% in the last one month, although it remains broadly flat on a year-to-date basis. The market capitalization of the company is currently at ₹88,516.26 crore, with free float valuation of ₹22,439.39 crore.
Management Outlook
During the June quarter earnings call, CEO Akshaya Moondra had emphasized that lenders are waiting for the AGR liability clarity before availing further credit lines. He was confident that the issue will be resolved, citing the government’s track record of relief initiatives such as spectrum deferment, reform packages, and conversion of a portion of the dues to equity.
