Mumbai, 16 September 2025: IPO-bound electric two-wheeler manufacturer Simple Energy has commenced commercial production of India’s first rare earth free motors at its Hosur, Tamil Nadu plant. The achievement is a milestone for India’s domestic electric vehicle (EV) industry, providing a substitute for supply chains that depend on highly imported rare earth elements.
Established in Bengaluru, Simple Energy is a player in the electric two-wheeler space and is famous for its electric scooters such as the Simple One. The company is also preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) to bolster its balance sheet and ramp up manufacturing capacity. Its new Hosur unit, where these motors are being manufactured, is a cornerstone in its plans to expand.
Simple Energy’s Production Drive Starts with Rare Earth Free Motors
The firm said its new range of motors is already being commercially produced, a move that is one step ahead in India’s self-reliance push for EVs. By doing away with rare earth elements, i.e., elements dominated by China, the Bengaluru-based start-up is establishing itself as a strategic player in the world EV landscape. The move is in line with its long-term vision to produce products that are “Built in India, for the World.”
Global Supply Chain Disruptions Drive Local Innovation
Simple Energy’s co-founder and CEO Suhas Rajkumar emphasized the need for localisation of EV production. “Global supply chain disruptions and material dependencies have made one thing clear: the future of electric mobility must be built on self-reliance. Deep localisation and a ‘Make in India’ approach are no longer aspirations, they’re imperatives,” he said.
The plan to adopt alternative motor technology became imperative following China’s export restrictions on rare earth minerals earlier this year, which interrupted automobile supply chains across the world. This triggered Simple Energy’s R&D investments to secure its base of supply.
Proprietary Technology Rivals Rare Earth Based Performance
The new motors utilize patented proprietary in-house compounds that substitute heavy rare earth magnets without sacrificing similar torque and performance levels. Proprietary algorithms have been integrated into the system by Simple Energy to provide dynamic heat and torque management.
The technology enables the motors to provide high efficiency without the use of critical minerals, demonstrating that sustainability and performance are not mutually exclusive. Having put production into action, the company has proved itself capable of industrialising cutting-edge R&D outcomes.
Industry Context: China’s Policies Trigger Innovation Drive in India
The breakthrough occurs at the time of China’s increasing grip on the export of rare earths, which has created ripple effects in global EV and electronics supply chains. India’s import-reliant automobile industry has come under increased risk.
In developing a rare earth free alternative, Simple Energy is lowering strategic risk for the Indian EV supply chain. The development also supports government agendas on localisation, adopting clean technology, and creating supply chains that are resilient industrially.
Simple Energy’s decision to begin manufacturing India’s first rare earth free EV motors is a milestone in localizing key EV technologies. The creation minimizes supply chain vulnerabilities, places the organization in alignment with national self-sufficiency aspirations, and heralds a new era in India’s drive towards innovation-led clean mobility.
