Mumbai, August 18: Indian sectoral indices ended largely lower on Tuesday, with IT stocks emerging as the biggest drag on the market as investors remained cautious amid elevated crude oil prices, renewed US-Iran tensions and higher global bond yields. The Nifty IT index fell 1.9%, while realty, FMCG and metal stocks also declined. In contrast, auto, media and oil & gas stocks ended in positive territory.
IT Stocks Lead Sectoral Decline
The Nifty IT index fell 1.9%, making it the worst-performing sectoral index of the session. Infosys (down 2.2%), HCL Technologies (2%) and Wipro (2%) were among the major losers on the Nifty.
Selling in IT stocks weighed heavily on the benchmark indices given the sector’s significant representation in the Nifty. Investors remained cautious about the growth outlook for technology companies amid concerns over global demand, technology spending and earnings visibility.
The sector’s weakness also came against a broader risk-off backdrop, with higher US Treasury yields potentially affecting valuations.
Realty Stocks Under Pressure
The Nifty Realty index declined 1.4% as selling pressure emerged across real estate counters.
The weakness in realty stocks came amid a cautious broader market environment, with investors assessing the impact of elevated interest rates and global uncertainty on the domestic economy. DLF declined 0.8% while Oberoi Realty slid 3.8%. Lodha Developers fell 3.4%.
FMCG Stocks Decline
The Nifty FMCG index fell 0.8%, with consumer-facing stocks also coming under pressure during the session.
The sector’s performance remained subdued as investors weighed the broader economic impact of higher crude oil prices. Sustained increases in energy costs can raise input and transportation expenses for consumer companies and potentially put pressure on margins. ITC declined 1.1% while Hindustan Unilever declined 1%. Colgate-Palmolive India shares fell 3% as brokerages raised concerns over the impact of higher growth investments on margins. Analysts cautioned that the company’s focus on premiumisation and category expansion could boost growth but also weigh on near-term earnings.
Metal Stocks Slip
The Nifty Metal index declined 0.6%, extending weakness across commodity-linked stocks.
Metal stocks remained under pressure amid uncertainty over global commodity demand and the broader risk-off mood in international markets. Higher oil prices and elevated global bond yields also added to investor caution. Hindustan Copper shares fell 1% on Tuesday after rallying in the previous session, tracking a decline in copper prices as investors assessed weaker-than-expected economic data from China and renewed supply concerns following the expiry of the US-Iran truce without a longer-term agreement. The pullback came a day after copper prices hit their highest level in more than six months, driven by concerns over tight availability on the London Metal Exchange.
Auto Stocks Buck Trend
The Nifty Auto index ended 0.6% higher, outperforming the broader market as buying interest emerged in automobile stocks.
The sector’s gains provided some support to the market and helped offset part of the weakness in IT and other major sectors. Mahindra & Mahindra was among the notable gainers on the Nifty.
Oil & Gas Stocks Gain
The Nifty Oil & Gas index rose 0.4%, even as crude oil prices climbed above $91 a barrel.
The rise in oil prices followed the expiry of a temporary US-Iran ceasefire and fading hopes of an immediate diplomatic breakthrough. The prospect of prolonged geopolitical tensions has raised concerns over global energy supplies.
While higher crude prices are a negative for India’s overall macroeconomic outlook, upstream energy companies can benefit from elevated realisations, supporting selective buying in the sector.
Media Sector Ends Higher
The Nifty Media index gained 0.6%, making it one of the better-performing sectors of the session.
The sector bucked the broader market trend as investors continued to favour select stocks despite weakness across several major sectoral indices.
Sectoral Outlook
The divergence across sectors highlighted the importance of stock and sector selection in Tuesday’s market. IT, realty, FMCG and metals faced selling pressure, while auto, media and oil & gas provided support.
Going ahead, crude oil prices, developments in the US-Iran conflict, global bond yields, the rupee and foreign fund flows are likely to remain key drivers for sectoral performance. A sustained rise in oil prices could particularly influence the outlook for oil-sensitive sectors, while higher global yields may continue to weigh on rate-sensitive and richly valued stocks.
With the Nifty extending its losing streak to six sessions, investors are likely to remain selective, with sector rotation and earnings visibility playing an increasingly important role in determining market direction.
