Mumbai, June 16: Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic is in discussions with Trump administration officials to restore access to its advanced AI models after the US government imposed restrictions over national security concerns, marking one of the most significant regulatory interventions in the AI industry to date.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Anthropic and senior administration officials are negotiating a potential agreement that could allow the company’s powerful Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models to return to service. The talks come days after the government restricted access to the models, citing concerns that they could be exploited by foreign military and intelligence agencies.

The discussions involve officials from the US Commerce Department and National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross, alongside Anthropic’s senior technical and security teams. Administration officials are reportedly seeking stronger assurances around model safety, security controls and communication protocols before restoring access.

Why the US Government Intervened

The dispute stems from concerns that Anthropic’s latest AI models could be “jailbroken” or manipulated to bypass safety safeguards, potentially enabling sophisticated cyber operations.

The Commerce Department ordered the company to halt exports of the models under authorities granted by the Export Control Reform Act, citing risks that foreign adversaries could misuse the technology.

Anthropic subsequently suspended access to the models globally rather than attempt to selectively restrict certain users. The company has argued that the vulnerabilities identified by regulators are not unique to its systems and that its safety measures are among the strongest in the industry.

The restrictions followed reports that researchers, including those linked to Amazon, identified security weaknesses in the models and alerted US officials. Amazon is both a major investor in and strategic partner of Anthropic.

Industry Watches for Outcome

The standoff is being closely watched across the technology sector because it represents the first major instance of the US government forcing the withdrawal of a frontier AI model from broad public access. More than 80 cybersecurity and technology experts have reportedly urged officials to reconsider the restrictions, arguing that the move could undermine US competitiveness in artificial intelligence.

The outcome of the negotiations could shape how future AI models are regulated and deployed, particularly as governments around the world grapple with balancing innovation and national security concerns.

About Anthropic

Founded in 2021 by siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, Anthropic is one of the world’s leading AI startups and the developer of the Claude family of AI models. The company counts Amazon and Google among its major backers and has emergedas one of OpenAI’s strongest competitors in the race to build advanced generative AI systems. Anthropic has been valued at more than $60 billion in private funding rounds and is widely viewed as a potential future IPO candidate.

Race To IPO

ChatGPT-maker OpenAI has confidentially filed for a US initial public offering (IPO), it said on June 8, joining rival Anthropic in a race to public markets as investors seek exposure to the booming artificial intelligence sector. The company did not disclose the size or timing of the offering.

The filing comes just a week after Anthropic confidentially submitted IPO paperwork, setting up what could become one of the most closely watched rivalries in technology markets. Anthropic’s move was viewed as an early test of whether public investors are willing to support the lofty valuations that have emerged in the AI sector amid explosive growth in generative AI.
