Mumbai, October 15: Crude oil prices declined on Thursday, October 15, as investors weighed the threat of supply disruptions from escalating tensions in the Middle East against efforts by the United States to ease restrictions on oil shipments and improve supply flows. Brent crude futures fell 1.5% to $104.4 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures dropped 1.2% to $93.9, reversing gains recorded in the previous session.
The decline came even as attacks on shipping near the Strait of Hormuz heightened concerns over the security of a critical global energy corridor. Oil prices remain elevated amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran, while increased production from Russia and Middle Eastern producers and potential changes to US shipping sanctions have helped temper the latest rally.
Middle East Tensions Keep Oil Supply Risks In Focus
Oil markets remain sensitive to developments around the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which a substantial share of global oil supplies passes. Attacks in the region have intensified over the past 10 days, with Iran signalling that it would step up strikes in response to the US blockade of its ports and tighter sanctions imposed last month.

Two vessels, a container ship and a dry bulk carrier, sank near the strait within 24 hours after being struck by projectiles in separate incidents, maritime officials said on Wednesday. The developments have raised concerns about the potential for further disruptions to oil shipments and higher transportation costs.
WTI had climbed to a three-week high in the previous session after Yemen’s Houthi militants attacked Saudi Aramco’s headquarters and Iran indicated that it was deploying new tactics to target vessels passing through the strait. The latest decline suggests that investors are balancing these geopolitical risks against prospects of additional supplies entering the market.
US Considers Easing Oil Shipping Sanctions
The US administration is considering easing sanctions on vessels that have previously transported oil and petroleum products from countries including Russia, Iran and Venezuela. The move is aimed at reducing shipping costs and facilitating the movement of petroleum supplies amid disruptions caused by the conflict.
The discussions reportedly centre on allowing oil shipments aboard previously sanctioned vessels to resume under permitted conditions. If implemented, such measures could improve the availability of shipping capacity and ease some of the pressure on energy transportation costs.
However, uncertainty over the scope and timing of any changes means that the potential impact on global oil supplies remains unclear. With security risks around the Strait of Hormuz unresolved, traders continue to monitor developments that could affect the availability and cost of crude oil.
Higher Russian And Middle Eastern Output Caps Gains
Increased oil production from Russia and Middle Eastern producers has helped limit upward pressure on prices. Russia’s crude oil output rose by 65,000 barrels per day in September to 8.43 million barrels per day, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Production nevertheless remained 870,000 barrels per day below its level a year earlier.
The IEA also reported that crude exports from Middle Eastern Gulf producers increased by 4.4 million barrels per day in September, recovering to around 75% of pre-war levels. The improvement in export flows has provided some relief to markets, although the risk of further attacks and higher freight costs continues to cloud the supply outlook.
US Crude Inventories In Focus
Meanwhile, US crude oil inventories fell sharply in the week ended October 9, according to data from the American Petroleum Institute cited by market sources. Crude stockpiles declined by 11.1 million barrels, substantially more than analysts polled by Reuters had expected. Distillate inventories also fell, while gasoline stocks increased.
Despite the larger-than-expected draw in crude inventories, oil prices showed little reaction, indicating that traders remained cautious about pushing prices higher amid uncertainty over supply and demand. Official inventory figures from the US Energy Information Administration were due later on Thursday after being delayed by a day following the Columbus Day holiday.
For India, a sustained decline in crude prices could offer some relief by moderating the import bill and easing pressure on the rupee and domestic inflation. However, with Brent still above $100 a barrel, geopolitical risks and shipping disruptions remain key variables for energy markets and the outlook for Indian equities.
