Mumbai, June 4: Petrol and diesel prices remained largely steady across India’s major metro cities and state capitals on Thursday, with only minor revisions recorded in select locations. While fuel rates in New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Hyderabad were mostly steady, cities such as Patna, Noida and Gurugram saw noticeable increases. The latest revisions come as retail fuel rates continue to react to state-level taxes, VAT and transportation costs.
State-owned fuel retailers on May 25 had raised petrol and diesel prices for the fourth time in 10 days, as a sharp rise in global crude oil prices squeezed marketing margins. Petrol prices were increased by ₹2.61 per litre, while diesel rates were hiked by ₹2.71 per litre.
Moreover, global oil prices saw a pullback on Thursday after Israel and Lebanon agreed to implement a ceasefire, raising hopes that tensions across the Middle East could ease. The pullback came after crude prices had surged earlier this week on concerns that escalating hostilities could disrupt global energy supplies.
Brent crude futures fell 0.9% to $96.9 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude dropped by the same amount to $95.2 a barrel.
