Gold prices in Chennai continued their downward trend on July 9, with the 24K rate slipping to ₹14,422 per gram and 22K gold easing to ₹13,220 per gram. The recent decline comes after the sharp rally seen during the first week of July, as prices continue to cool from monthly highs.

Chennai, July 9:Gold prices in Chennai edged lower on Thursday, extending the soft patch that has followed last week’s rally. While the decline wasn’t dramatic, it marked yet another day of easing prices after gold touched its monthly peak earlier this month.
According to the latest retail rates, 24K gold is priced at ₹14,422 per gram, down ₹33 from Wednesday. 22K gold slipped by ₹30 to ₹13,220 per gram, while 18K gold also declined by ₹30 to ₹11,040 per gram.
For buyers who were waiting for prices to cool, the recent trend could be encouraging. After several days of gains at the beginning of July, the market appears to be settling into a more balanced phase.

The Early July Rally Has Given Way to a Gradual Pullback
The first few days of July saw gold prices move up sharply. On July 2, 24K gold jumped by ₹327 per gram, followed by another gain on July 3 that pushed prices to ₹14,956 per gram, the highest level recorded this month.
Since then, however, the momentum has faded. Prices have either remained unchanged or moved lower almost every day, with Thursday marking the latest leg of that correction.
Even so, the broader picture hasn’t turned negative. Compared with the start of July, 24K gold is still ₹367 per gram higher, while 22K gold has gained ₹170 per gram, showing that much of the early rally remains intact.

What Is July Telling Us So Far?
Although prices have come off their monthly highs, gold is still trading comfortably above where it ended June. The correction has trimmed some of the earlier gains but hasn’t erased them.
That means buyers who held off during last week’s spike are now seeing slightly better prices, while long-term investors still have a market that’s holding on to much of its monthly advance.
Why Do Gold Prices Change Every Day?
Gold prices in Chennai are influenced by much more than local jewellery demand. Global bullion prices, movements in the rupee against the US dollar, import duties, central bank policy expectations and international economic developments all play an important role in determining daily retail rates.
As these factors change, local gold prices adjust accordingly.
Conclusion
Gold prices in Chennai continued to soften on Thursday, extending the correction that began after the sharp rally at the start of July. While prices have eased for several sessions, they remain comfortably above their levels at the beginning of the month. For jewellery buyers, the recent decline could offer a slightly better entry point, while investors may continue watching for signs of whether this pullback has further to run.
