Monday’s weakness follows the recent volatility seen throughout last week and suggests some investors sold holdings at higher levels even as gold trades have remained two way through the past few sessions. Overall, bullion dealers said demand at jewellery outlets has remained healthy amid the wedding season, with investors also looking to balance the near-term outlook for gold prices against expectations for global interest rates and inflation-driven safe-haven demand. Investors will continue to focus on incoming economic data points that provide clues on how quickly central banks buy bullion and the general direction of the dollar, factors that have influenced prices throughout recent months.
Spot gold rates usually track movements in international bullion prices along with macroeconomic variables unique to India, namely the rupee-dollar exchange rate and import duties. Domestic rates are also being watched for hints on whether gold corrects from here or continues to move toward recent highs.
