Kotak Mahindra Bank Ends with Heaviest LossesAmong Nifty 50 Losers on Tuesday

Mumbai, May 19: Kotak Mahindra Bank was Tuesday’s top loser on the Nifty 50, falling 2.40% even as the broader market staged a firm rally led by IT stocks, with private lenders, consumer names, cement, pharma and airlines bearing the brunt of selective selling as investors rotated decisively into technology and export-oriented plays following U.S. President Donald Trump’s pause on a planned Iran military strike.
Titan, UltraTech Cement, Tata Consumer Products, Bharti Airtel, and Adani Ports also featured among the top six index losers, with stocks declining between 1.33% and 2.40% as the day’s gains remained narrowly concentrated in a handful of IT and chemicals names rather than spreading to the full market.
Kotak Mahindra Bank: Top Loser
Kotak Mahindra Bank (KOTAKBANK) was the biggest Nifty 50 decliner on Tuesday, falling 2.40% to close at Rs 382.40, down from its previous close of Rs 391.80 on the NSE. The stock opened at Rs 388.50, briefly touched an intraday high of Rs 391.80 before sellers overwhelmed the counter, driving it to a session low of Rs 380.25. Over 2.25 crore shares worth approximately Rs 868 crore changed hands. Kotak’s sharp underperformance on an otherwise buoyant day reflected the persistent pressure on private sector lenders — any near-term prospect of rate cuts triggered by easing inflation, while welcomed by the broader market, directly squeezes net interest margins at premium-valued private banks, making them vulnerable to rotation-driven selling on risk-on days.
Titan
Titan Company (TITAN) was the second-biggest Nifty 50 loser on Tuesday, declining 1.79% to close at Rs 4,095, down from its previous close of Rs 4,169.70. The stock opened at Rs 4,136.30, touched an intraday high of Rs 4,167.90, before retreating to close at its session low of Rs 4,095. Approximately 7.11 lakh shares worth Rs 293 crore were traded. Titan’s weakness reflected continued caution around premium consumer discretionary names, with investors wary that sustained inflationary pressures and macroeconomic uncertainty could weigh on jewellery and lifestyle spending even as geopolitical fears eased.
UltraTech Cement
UltraTech Cement (ULTRACEMCO) was the third-biggest loser, slipping 1.78% to Rs 11,355 from its previous close of Rs 11,561. The cement giant opened at Rs 11,540, touched a high of Rs 11,556, and fell to a session low of Rs 11,347. Around 3.48 lakh shares worth Rs 396 crore were traded. UltraTech’s decline reflected ongoing concerns about demand-side pressures in the construction sector and margin headwinds from elevated energy input costs that have persisted through the recent months of crude oil volatility.
Tata Consumer Products
Tata Consumer Products (TATACONSUM) fell 1.62% to Rs 1,211 from its previous close of Rs 1,231, opening at Rs 1,231, hitting a high of Rs 1,236.60 and dropping to a session low of Rs 1,206.40. Over 21.64 lakh shares worth Rs 264 crore were traded as the FMCG major faced profit-booking after recent gains, with investors broadly preferring IT names over consumer staples on a day when the macro narrative shifted toward export-sector optimism.
Bharti Airtel
Bharti Airtel (BHARTIARTL) declined 1.40% to Rs 1,911 from its previous close of Rs 1,938.10, opening at Rs 1,928.40 and touching a high of Rs 1,942 before retreating to a session low of Rs 1,907.80. Around 89.62 lakh shares worth Rs 1,720 crore were traded. Airtel’s slide on an IT-driven rally day was notable, given its defensive character, suggesting some profit-taking in a stock that had held up well during Monday’s volatility.
Adani Ports
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (ADANIPORTS) rounded out the top six Nifty 50 losers on Tuesday, falling 1.33% to Rs 1,764 from its previous close of Rs 1,787.70. The stock opened at Rs 1,790.80, hit a high of Rs 1,805 and recorded a session low of Rs 1,758.80, with approximately 22.75 lakh shares worth Rs 406 crore traded, as infrastructure and logistics names lagged the technology-driven advance for the second consecutive session.
