16th October 2025: Muhurat Trading is a unique ritual in the Indian stock markets, where a one-hour trading session on the day of Diwali is dedicated to the auspicious period of Laxmi Pujan. For 2025, it will take place on Tuesday, 21st October 2025, from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM Indian Standard Time (IST).

The session celebrates the onset of Samvat 2082, the Hindu financial year, combining centuries-old illusions of wealth and prosperity with the new age of India’s modern capital markets. This hour is considered symbolic by investors, traders, and institutions to start the new year on a normal and auspicious note.

Muhurat Trading A Tradition Rooted in Faith and Finance

Muhurat Trading started in 1957 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and in 1992 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). Muhurat is a term that translates to a favourable time, considered to bring prosperity and success. During this period, most investors conduct the Lakshmi Puja and begin a new portfolio, believing they are pressing a reset button on both a spiritual and financial level.

These may be smaller than usual trading volumes in a typical session, but there is an elevated sentiment since the market reflects a festive mood and investor confidence.

Muhurat Trading Historical Market Performance: Mostly in the Green

Historically, Muhurat Trading has tended to yield positive market results. Throughout the past decade, benchmark indices like the Sensex and Nifty have closed up in almost 80% of cases, driven by the festive mood and selective buying. For instance, in 2023, the Nifty was up about 0.6% while in 2024, it registered nearly 0.4% gains in the Muhurat session.

The optimistic trend is that long-term investors are acquiring good-quality stocks, and institutions are adjusting their portfolios before the start of a new Samvat year.

Muhurat Trading Investor Behaviour and Market Sentiment

In contrast to normal sessions centred on high-frequency trading, Muhurat Trading is associated with investment activities that are more symbolic and longer-term in nature. Retail investors, High Net-worth Individuals (HNIs), and institutional players often use this opportunity to purchase fundamentally strong stocks as an expression of goodwill.

Outlook for Samvat 2082: Optimism with Caution

As the Indian economy expands due to high corporate profits and strong domestic demand, analysts expect equities to follow a similar route through Samvat 2082. That said, some analysts caution investors to remain aware of global macroeconomic risks and changing interest rates.

Therefore, during Muhurat Trading 2025, it is considered not only a tradition but also a new faith in India’s growth story, where spirituality meets smart investing.
