Mumbai, October 15: Petrol and diesel prices today, October 15, remained unchanged across most major Indian cities, with New Delhi retailing petrol at Rs 102.12 per litre and diesel at Rs 95.20 per litre. While petrol prices were steady across all cities listed, diesel prices in Jaipur declined by Rs 0.47 per litre to Rs 97.78.
Oil prices declined in early trade on Thursday as investors weighed the risk of supply disruptions amid escalating tensions in the Middle East against potential measures by the United States to ease restrictions on oil shipments. Brent crude futures fell 1.5% to $104.4 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures dropped 1.2% to $93.9, reversing gains from the previous session.
The decline came after oil prices climbed in the previous session, with WTI touching a three-week high following attacks by Yemen’s Houthi militants on Saudi Aramco’s headquarters and Iran’s warning of new tactics to target shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Two vessels, a container ship and a dry bulk carrier, sank near the strategic waterway within 24 hours after being struck by projectiles, according to maritime officials. The developments have heightened concerns over the security of a key global oil transit route.
However, the US administration is considering easing sanctions on vessels previously used to transport oil from countries including Russia, Iran and Venezuela, in a bid to reduce shipping costs and improve the flow of petroleum supplies. Higher output from Russia and Middle Eastern producers has also helped temper prices. Russia’s crude production increased by 65,000 barrels per day in September to 8.43 million barrels per day, while crude exports from Middle Eastern Gulf producers rose by 4.4 million barrels per day to around 75% of pre-war levels, the International Energy Agency said.
Meanwhile, US crude inventories fell sharply last week, with stockpiles declining by 11.1 million barrels in the week ended October 9, according to American Petroleum Institute data cited by market sources. Distillate inventories also fell, while gasoline stocks increased. Despite the larger-than-expected draw in crude stocks, prices showed limited reaction, suggesting investors remain reluctant to push prices higher amid uncertainty over supply and demand. Traders are awaiting official US Energy Information Administration inventory data for further direction.
