Record-Breaking GST Boosts FY25 Basket: ₹22.08 Lakh Cr, Monthly Average at ₹1.84 Lakh Cr

New Delhi, June 30 – India’s total GST collections reached an all-time high of ₹22.08 lakh crore in FY25. This is a huge 94% increase from ₹11.37 lakh crore in FY21. The monthly average collection for FY25 was ₹1.84 lakh crore, which is more than the ₹1.68 lakh crore collected in FY24 and the ₹1.51 lakh crore collected in FY22. This shows that consumption and compliance have been steadily increasing.
Since the system started, GST registrations have more than doubled, going from over 65 lakh in 2017 to more than 1.51 crore active taxpayers as of FY25. The fiscal year also saw strong monthly collections, with record highs of ₹2.37 lakh crore in April and ₹2.01 lakh crore in May. This led to a 9.4% year-on-year increase in collections.

Monthly Averages Improve
The average monthly GST collection in FY25 stood at ₹1.84 lakh crore, significantly higher than ₹1.68 lakh crore in FY24 and ₹1.51 lakh crore in FY22. In comparison, FY22’s average was just ₹95,000 crore, indicating a robust expansion in tax inflows.

April 2025 witnessed the highest-ever monthly GST mop-up at ₹2.37 lakh crore, followed by ₹2.01 lakh crore in May 2025. Collections for June 2025 are scheduled to be released on Tuesday.
Taxpayer Base Doubles in 8 Years
Since its inception in July 2017, the GST system has more than doubled its taxpayer base, rising from 65 lakh to over 1.51 crore registered taxpayers, reflecting the expanding formalisation of the economy.
Government Commentary
A government statement commemorating eight years of GST highlighted,
“Since its rollout, the goods and services tax has shown strong growth in revenue collection and tax base expansion. It has steadily strengthened India’s fiscal position and made indirect taxation more efficient and transparent.”
The GST system, based on a five-tier tax structure, replaced 17 local taxes and 13 cesses, simplifying the overall indirect tax landscape.
