Mumbai, August 14: Indian equities remained under pressure on Friday as persistent Middle East tensions and elevated crude oil prices overshadowed positive global cues and expectations of a steady U.S. interest-rate outlook. The sectoral picture was broadly weak, with metal stocks emerging as the biggest laggards, while financials also declined, as investors remained cautious ahead of the weekend.

Metal Stocks Lead Sectoral Declines

Metal stocks were the worst performers, falling 0.7%. The decline comes as investors assess the impact of global commodity-price movements and geopolitical uncertainty on demand and margins.

Shares of Vedanta Aluminium, Hindalco Industries and National Aluminium Company (NALCO) came under selling pressure on Friday, falling as much as 6%, after a sharp reversal in global aluminium prices weakened the outlook for metal producers. The decline came just two days after aluminium stocks had rallied on expectations of tighter global supplies and higher metal prices.

The immediate trigger for Friday’s selloff was a decline in global aluminium prices after they had climbed to a seven-week high. The earlier rally had been driven by concerns over supply disruptions amid Middle East tensions, which had raised fears about production and supply chains.

However, the supply outlook changed after Norsk Hydro bumped up production at its Alunorte alumina refinery in Brazil. The company received regulatory approval allowing it to self-import gas, enabling the facility to increase production and easing concerns over tight global alumina and aluminium supplies.

NALCO and Hindalco had gained earlier in the week as global aluminium prices climbed on supply concerns linked to geopolitical tensions.

Metal companies could remain sensitive to developments in global growth expectations, commodity prices and China’s economic outlook.

Financial Stocks Under Pressure

Financial stocks extended their losses from yesterday, with the financial services index declining 0.4% today as well as investors remained cautious over the potential impact of the Reserve Bank of India’s proposed loan-pricing norms announced the day before.

Moreover, banks and financial companies have remained sensitive to foreign investor flows, with financials traditionally accounting for a significant portion of overseas institutional allocations to Indian equities. Private lenders Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank slipped while State Bank of India declined 1.4%.

Auto Stocks Face Earnings Pressure

The auto sector remained under pressure, with Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles emerging as one of the biggest drags on the benchmark indices. The stock fell 4.3% after the company reported an 80% year-on-year decline in quarterly profit, hurt by higher costs and foreign-exchange losses.

The company’s weak earnings performance has raised concerns over margins even as domestic demand remains relatively resilient. Investors are likely to track commodity costs, product launches and the performance of Jaguar Land Rover in the coming quarters.

Commercial vehicle maker Ashok Leyland fell 2.6%.

IT Stocks Slip

Information technology index slipped 0.3% despite a favourable U.S. rate backdrop. Softer U.S. inflation has reduced expectations of an imminent Federal Reserve rate hike, which could support technology and other rate-sensitive stocks globally.

The sector’s performance will continue to depend on the U.S. economic outlook, technology spending and currency movements. Infosys declined 0.5% and TCS slipped 0.6%.

Telecom, Consumer Stocks In Focus

The telecom sector could remain stock-specific, with Bharti Airtel showing relative strength while Vodafone Idea continues to attract investor attention following its three-year network expansion roadmap.

Meanwhile, consumer-facing companies could benefit if domestic demand remains resilient, although higher energy and commodity costs could eventually affect margins. LG Electronics India was among the stronger individual performers after reporting a more than 27% increase in quarterly profit and retaining its full-year revenue growth guidance.

Sectoral Outlook

The immediate sectoral setup remains cautious, with crude oil and Middle East developments likely to determine the direction of cyclical sectors such as metals, energy, autos and financials. At the same time, softer U.S. inflation and expectations of stable Federal Reserve policy could provide support to IT and other rate-sensitive segments.

For Indian markets, however, the key variable remains oil. Any further escalation in the U.S.-Iran conflict that pushes crude materially higher could increase pressure on the rupee, inflation and corporate margins. Conversely, a sustained cooling in oil prices could provide relief to the broader market and allow domestic equities to refocus on earnings and India’s underlying growth outlook.
