Mumbai, August 27: Indian equities ended lower for a second straight session on Thursday, with 11 of the 16 major sectoral indices declining, as weakness in heavyweight stocks offset gains in select defensive pockets. The Nifty 50 fell 0.48% to 24,090.85, while the Sensex declined 0.70% to 76,933.59. Small-cap and mid-cap indices ended broadly flat, indicating that the pressure was concentrated more heavily in large-cap stocks.

Pharma outperforms

Pharma stocks were among the strongest performers, with the sectoral index gaining 0.8%. Cipla (up 1.2%), Wockhardt (4.2%), Zydus Lifesciences (3.4%), Laurus Labs (2.2%), Piramal Pharma (1.7%), and Sun Pharma (0.7%) were among the stocks supporting the sector.

The relative strength in healthcare comes as investors seek defensive exposure amid uncertainty over global interest rates, geopolitical developments and the outlook for equities. The sector’s resilience also helped cushion the broader market decline.

Consumer durables gain

Consumer Durables was another outperforming segment, with the sectoral index rising 0.7%. The gains reflected investor preference for sectors that are less directly exposed to commodity-price volatility and global growth concerns.

The sector’s performance contrasted with weakness across several cyclical segments, suggesting some rotation within the market rather than a broad-based risk-off move across all stocks.

Metals under pressure

Metal stocks were among the biggest drags, with Hindalco Industries featuring among the top losers on the Nifty. The broader metal index declined as investors remained cautious towards commodity-linked counters.

Hindustan Copper shares fell 3.5% on Thursday, amid robust participation in the government’s offer for sale (OFS) in the state-owned copper producer which ended today.

The weakness in metals also came despite the decline in crude oil prices, highlighting that the sector’s performance was being driven more by stock-specific and commodity-market concerns than by the softer energy backdrop.

Banks and financials mixed

The financial sector saw mixed trading, with the Nifty Private Bank index ending up subdued despite Kotak Mahindra Bank and ICICI Bank clocking gains. Moreover, ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company declined 4% after promoter Prudential Corporation offloaded a 2% stake, as part of efforts to comply with prescribed shareholding requirements.

IT stocks remain weak

Information technology stocks continued to face pressure, even as global technology shares benefited from Nvidia’s strong earnings. Infosys declined 0.8% while TCS fell 0.9%. Indian IT stocks have remained vulnerable to concerns over U.S. visa restrictions and uncertainty around technology spending.

The divergent performance between global technology stocks and Indian IT counters highlights the market’s focus on company-specific exposure to U.S. clients, immigration costs and the potential disruption from artificial intelligence.

Oil and gas get crude relief

Oil and gas stocks remained under pressure even as crude prices eased. Brent crude hovered around $88 a barrel as expectations of renewed U.S.-Iran talks raised hopes that disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz could ease. Qatar’s prime minister was due to visit Tehran as part of efforts to restart peace talks.

For India, lower crude prices remain a positive macroeconomic factor because they can ease pressure on inflation, the import bill and the current account. However, the immediate benefit was insufficient to lift the broader energy sector. Refiner Reliance declined 1.2% while fuel retailers HPCL and IOC fell 1.2% and 1.4% respectively.

Overall, the session showed a clear defensive rotation towards pharma and consumer durables, while metals, IT and select heavyweight financial stocks remained under pressure. The broader market remained relatively resilient, with small- and mid-cap indices ending flat despite the decline in the headline benchmarks.
