Mumbai, May 18:Markets are headed into another event-heavy week where investors are likely to juggle a packed earnings calendar, key global economic indicators and persistent macro risks stemming from elevated crude oil prices, rising U.S. bond yields and rupee weakness.

After a volatile week marked by a record low rupee, sharp swings in metal and oil-linked shares and continued geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, investors are expected to remain cautious as they assess whether global inflationary pressures are beginning to re-emerge. Brent crude trading above $100 per barrel and concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz have added another layer of uncertainty for equity markets globally, particularly for oil-importing economies such as India.

Domestically, the spotlight will remain firmly on corporate earnings, with several heavyweight companies across sectors such as oil & gas, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, FMCG, defence, insurance, infrastructure and consumption set to report quarterly numbers. Investors will also monitor commentary around demand trends, margins, capital expenditure plans and the impact of volatile commodity prices on profitability.

On the macro front, the release of India’s manufacturing and services PMI data, Japan’s first-quarter GDP figures and the minutes of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s latest policy meeting are likely to influence sentiment across global markets. Traders will also keep a close watch on currency movements, foreign institutional investor flows and bond yields for further direction.
