Mumbai, October 27: Crude oil prices declined on Tuesday as diplomatic efforts to ease the US-Israeli war on Iran raised hopes of a de-escalation in the Middle East and reduced concerns over supply disruptions. However, continued attacks on Saudi Arabia and threats to critical shipping routes kept oil prices elevated, limiting the extent of the decline.

Brent crude futures fell 0.96% to $114.70 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures slipped 0.9% to $100.80 per barrel. The retreat followed a volatile session on Monday, when both benchmarks settled lower amid hopes of diplomatic progress, even as geopolitical risks continued to cloud the outlook for global energy supplies.

Investor sentiment improved after Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan held discussions with Iranian officials in Tehran on Monday, seeking to establish channels for negotiations and prevent a renewed escalation of hostilities. Saudi Arabia said the visit was aimed at opening communication channels to prevent military tensions from flaring up again.

Iranian state media reported that the four countries had agreed to continue discussions focused on peace, security and regional cooperation. The diplomatic engagement offered some relief to oil markets, where prices have surged in recent sessions on fears that the conflict could further disrupt crude production, exports and shipping.

However, investors remain cautious about the prospects of a lasting resolution. The conflict, which began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February, has spread across the region, disrupting energy transportation and raising concerns about the reliability of supplies from some of the world’s most important oil-producing countries.

Saudi Arabia Attacks Keep Supply Risks Elevated

Renewed attacks involving Iran-aligned Houthi forces have continued to undermine hopes of an immediate return to stability. The Houthis claimed strikes on pumping stations along Saudi Arabia’s East-West crude oil pipeline and Riyadh airport over the weekend, although Saudi Arabia had not immediately confirmed the reported attacks.

The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen said it had destroyed three drones targeting Riyadh and the kingdom’s southern regions on Monday. The developments have kept traders alert to the possibility of further damage to energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s leading oil exporters.

Concerns also persist over commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The Strait of Hormuz, in particular, is a crucial artery for global energy trade, carrying around a fifth of the world’s energy supplies before the conflict erupted in February.

According to data compiled by the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, October has been the worst month for attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waterways since the organisation began tracking maritime security incidents in 2017.

The risk of further disruptions has kept a geopolitical premium in crude prices, limiting the relief offered by diplomatic developments. Brent crude surged above $117 per barrel last week, reaching its highest level since April, following attacks on tankers near the strategic waterway.

Oil Prices Remain a Concern for India

For India, a major crude oil importer, prices hovering around $115 per barrel for Brent and above $100 for WTI pose significant macroeconomic challenges. Sustained increases in crude prices can raise the country’s import bill, put pressure on the current account deficit and increase inflationary risks through higher fuel, transport and manufacturing costs.

Expensive crude can also squeeze corporate margins, particularly for sectors with high energy consumption and limited pricing power. Oil marketing companies, airlines, paints manufacturers, chemicals producers and logistics businesses are among those that could face cost pressures if elevated prices persist.

Higher imported inflation could further complicate the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy outlook by limiting the scope for easing if price pressures intensify. A prolonged period of expensive crude could also weigh on investor sentiment towards Indian equities, particularly if foreign fund outflows continue.

Market Outlook: Geopolitical Developments in Focus

Oil markets are likely to remain sensitive to developments surrounding negotiations with Iran, attacks on Saudi Arabian infrastructure and the security of commercial shipping routes. A credible diplomatic breakthrough could ease the risk premium embedded in prices, while renewed attacks or further disruptions to energy flows could trigger another rally.

Separately, Russian refiners are increasing diesel production in October after the government granted export quotas following a supply agreement with the United States, Reuters reported. However, additional diesel output may offer only limited relief if geopolitical tensions continue to threaten the broader energy supply chain.

For now, the decline in crude prices reflects cautious optimism rather than a clear resolution of the supply concerns that have driven the recent rally. Traders will continue to monitor diplomatic negotiations and regional security developments to determine whether the latest pullback can be sustained.
