Mumbai, August 5: Crude oil prices extended their decline on Wednesday, with benchmark contracts falling for a third consecutive session as easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and hopes of a gradual resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz reduced concerns over supply disruptions. Investors also remained focused on U.S. crude inventory data and diplomatic developments for fresh cues on the market’s direction.

Brent crude futures fell 1.16% to $78.44 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude declined 1.5% to $74.63 a barrel. The losses followed a steep two-day sell-off that erased much of the geopolitical risk premium built into oil prices during the recent conflict between the United States and Iran.

Brent, WTI Extend Declines After Two-Day Sell-Off

Oil prices have come under sustained pressure this week after investors reassessed the likelihood of prolonged supply disruptions in the Middle East. Both Brent and WTI had surged in recent weeks amid fears that escalating hostilities could disrupt crude exports from the Gulf region.

However, sentiment has shifted as diplomatic efforts gained momentum, prompting traders to unwind some of the risk premium embedded in crude prices. Brent has now slipped below the psychologically important $79-a-barrel mark, while WTI has fallen below $75, reflecting expectations that global supplies may remain largely uninterrupted.

Analysts said the recent decline also reflects profit-booking after crude’s sharp rally in July, when concerns over the conflict had driven prices to multi-week highs.

Strait Of Hormuz Remains In Focus

The Strait of Hormuz continues to be the biggest geopolitical factor influencing oil markets.

The narrow waterway, located between Oman and Iran, is one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, with nearly 20% of global oil and fuel shipments passing through it. Any disruption to traffic through the strait can significantly affect global energy supplies and push crude prices sharply higher.

Market sentiment improved after reports suggested that diplomatic efforts, including mediation by Qatar, could help restore normal shipping through the strategic route. Expectations that commercial tanker traffic may gradually resume have eased fears of prolonged supply disruptions.

However, uncertainty remains elevated after Iran rejected claims made by U.S. President Donald Trump that negotiations were underway. Traders continue to monitor developments closely, as any escalation could quickly reverse the recent decline in oil prices.

U.S. Inventory Data In Spotlight

Apart from geopolitical developments, investors are awaiting fresh supply data from the United States.

Industry data released by the American Petroleum Institute (API) indicated that U.S. crude oil inventories increased by around 2.7 million barrels in the week ended July 31, suggesting that supply may be outpacing demand in the world’s largest oil-consuming nation.

The market is now awaiting the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) official weekly inventory report later in the day. The data will provide a clearer picture of crude stockpiles, gasoline inventories and refinery activity, all of which are closely tracked by energy traders.

A larger-than-expected increase in inventories could add further downward pressure on crude prices, while an unexpected drawdown may provide some support to the market.

Cooling Oil Prices Could Benefit India

The recent decline in crude prices could offer relief to oil-importing economies such as India, which meets more than 85% of its crude oil requirement through imports.

Lower crude prices help reduce the country’s import bill, ease inflationary pressures and improve the government’s fiscal position. Softer energy costs can also support corporate profitability by lowering input costs for sectors such as aviation, paints, chemicals, logistics and manufacturing.

For equity markets, sustained weakness in crude prices is generally viewed as a positive development, particularly for sectors that are sensitive to fuel costs. However, investors are expected to remain cautious until there is greater clarity on geopolitical developments and the outlook for global oil demand.

What Investors Are Watching

Going forward, oil markets are likely to remain driven by a combination of geopolitical headlines and economic data.

Traders will closely track any updates on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, diplomatic engagement between the United States and Iran, and official U.S. inventory data. In addition, investors will monitor global economic indicators for signs of demand strength, as slowing economic activity in major economies could further weigh on oil consumption.

While crude prices have corrected sharply over the past three sessions, analysts believe volatility is likely to remain elevated as geopolitical risks continue to influence market sentiment.
