Mumbai, Oct 13: Easing but still elevated oil prices and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) measures to curb rupee depreciation announced since Saturday lifted investor sentiment on Tuesday morning, with the Sensex and Nifty trading higher. Investors looked past US President Donald Trump’s “energy ceasefire” between Russia and Ukraine, as Kyiv said Moscow had hit at least six energy targets on its soil.
US President Donald Trump said Russia had agreed to supply diesel to global markets, while his administration temporarily lifted sanctions on Russian fuel. This eased oil prices.
Investors are now looking to the September-quarter earnings season for strength, after Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported a 15 per cent rise in net profit.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Russia hit at least six energy targets in deadly airstrikes on Monday, showing it had no interest in the ceasefire, and the European Union approved its largest set of sanctions on Russia since the 2022 invasion. In the Middle East, Iran called the US response to its Hormuz proposal “insufficient”. Houthi strikes on Riyadh airport have killed at least 18 people in the past week.
The Sensex was trading at 72,277.97, up 353.29 points or 0.49 per cent, at 9:26 am, while the Nifty 50 was at 22,458.20, up 94.85 points or 0.42 per cent, at 9:27 am. Both benchmarks are recovering from Monday’s slide, when the Sensex fell 547.65 points to 71,924.68 and the Nifty lost 157.10 points to 22,363.35.
Top Nifty Gainers and Losers
Information technology heavyweights led the Nifty 50 gainers in early trade, rebounding from Monday’s sell-off, when Tech Mahindra was among the biggest Nifty losers. HCL Technologies (HCLTECH) rose 4.09 per cent to Rs 1,273 from the previous close of Rs 1,223, a gain of Rs 50, while Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) gained 4.05 per cent to Rs 2,211.10 from Rs 2,125, up Rs 86.10. Tech Mahindra (TECHM) climbed 2.08 per cent to Rs 1,501.60 from Rs 1,471, HDFC Bank (HDFCBANK) added 1.50 per cent to Rs 715.50 from Rs 704.90, and Infosys (INFY) rose 1.47 per cent to Rs 1,035 from Rs 1,020.
On the losing side, Max Healthcare Institute (MAXHEALTH) fell 1.51 per cent to Rs 852.90 from Rs 865.95, a drop of Rs 13.05, while NTPC (NTPC) slipped 0.90 per cent to Rs 307.20 from Rs 310 and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) lost 0.76 per cent to Rs 282.30 from Rs 284.45. Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) declined 0.74 per cent to Rs 247.15 from Rs 249, and Maruti Suzuki India (MARUTI) eased 0.49 per cent to Rs 11,260 from Rs 11,315, a drop of Rs 55. Buying was concentrated in IT stocks and HDFC Bank, while power utilities NTPC and Power Grid were among the laggards.
Broader Markets and Sectors
In the broader market, the Nifty 100 rose 0.25 per cent to 23,484.55, the Nifty 200 gained 0.20 per cent to 13,036.70 and the Nifty LargeMidcap 250 added 0.11 per cent to 15,583.20. The Nifty Bank rose 0.44 per cent to 55,161.85, while smallcaps were under pressure, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 down 1.06 per cent at 19,220.40, the Nifty Smallcap 50 down 1.03 per cent at 9,598.40 and the Nifty Smallcap 250 down 0.79 per cent at 17,631.75. Oil Prices
Oil prices eased on Tuesday but stayed elevated, with Brent crude futures down 1.15 per cent at $105.42 a barrel and US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude down 1.27 per cent at $92.55. Gulf grades moved the other way, as Murban crude rose 1.48 per cent to $112.24 and the OPEC basket gained 4.14 per cent to $114.03, according to OilPrice.com data that carries a delay of up to four days. Gasoline futures fell 1.31 per cent and heating oil 1.07 per cent, while natural gas dipped 0.19 per cent to $3.161. For India, a large oil importer, prices at these levels keep pressure on the import bill and the rupee, which the RBI’s latest measures are seeking to support.
Middle East Conflict
Saudi Arabia’s civil defence authority issued its first public alerts since September 29 on Monday, warning of potential threats in Riyadh and southern cities, after four attacks on Riyadh airport in the past week killed at least 18 people and wounded more than 300. The government has not said why no warnings were issued before the strikes, which Western and Arab officials and analysts told Reuters raised questions about the kingdom’s vulnerability and its ability to protect residents and visitors. All Gulf countries have been hit by Iranian drones and missiles since the US-Iran war began in February, though Qatar has issued mobile phone alerts before nearly every attack, and Bahrain and Kuwait have repeatedly sounded sirens. Separately, Iran’s security chief Mohsen Rezaei said on Sunday that the US response to Tehran’s seven conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz was “insufficient”, leaving the waterway that carried a fifth of the world’s oil and gas before the war closed.
Asian Markets
Asian stocks fell sharply on Tuesday morning as a sell-off in US semiconductor shares spilled into the region over worries about artificial intelligence financing and intensifying competition. South Korea’s KOSPI dropped 6.18 per cent to 5,989.50, with SK Hynix down more than 8 per cent and Samsung Electronics down 6.7 per cent, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 2.5 per cent to 67,301.77 as SoftBank Group sank 8.8 per cent and Tokyo Electron dropped 6.75 per cent. Taiwan’s index lost 1.94 per cent to 48,346.28, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 0.95 per cent to 24,040.41 and Shenzhen and Shanghai lost 1.73 per cent and 0.92 per cent, while Australia’s ASX 200 slipped 0.19 per cent to 8,766.70 and Singapore’s Straits Times edged up 0.03 per cent.
US Markets
Wall Street ended mixed on Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.38 per cent, or 195.60 points, at 51,850.55, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.44 per cent to 27,245.90 and the S&P 500 slipped 0.06 per cent to 7,807.24; the Nasdaq 100 lost 0.71 per cent and the VIX rose 2.49 per cent to 15.21. Micron Technology slid 3.9 per cent as investors weighed competition from China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies, and the chief executives of Intel and Broadcom warned that access to capital could become a headwind for the AI boom. Investors are looking ahead to a busy week of corporate earnings and US inflation data, which could offer clues on interest rates.
Previous Close
The Sensex and Nifty 50 ended lower on Monday, October 12, reversing early gains, with the Sensex falling 547.65 points, or 0.76 per cent, to 71,924.68 and the Nifty losing 157.10 points, or 0.70 per cent, to 22,363.35. Selling in information technology, fast-moving consumer goods and financial stocks weighed on sentiment, with Tech Mahindra (TECHM), ITC (ITC), Larsen & Toubro (LT), Hindalco Industries (HINDALCO) and Hindustan Unilever (HINDUNILVR) the biggest Nifty losers, while Dr Reddy’s Laboratories (DRREDDY), Bajaj Auto (BAJAJ-AUTO), Bharat Electronics (BEL), BSE Limited (BSE) and TMPV were among the top gainers. Market breadth was balanced, with 2,187 stocks advancing, 2,066 declining and 235 unchanged, while the Nifty Media index surged 4.6 per cent and the smallcap index rose 1.4 per cent. Investors stayed cautious over foreign fund outflows, elevated energy prices and the RBI’s decision to raise the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.5 per cent.
