Mumbai, Oct 5: Indian equity benchmarks traded higher in early deals on Monday, tracking upbeat Asian stocks, a positive Wall Street close on Friday, and easing oil prices.

Investors await the RBI’s rate decision on Wednesday morning, after the Monetary Policy Committee’s October 5-7 meeting.

The 30-share BSE Sensex gained 453.04 points, or 0.63 per cent, to 72,362.74 while the NSE Nifty 50 rose 125.75 points, or 0.56 per cent, to 22,547.70 at 9:25 am. Banks, metal and oil and gas stocks led the gains, while healthcare, pharma and IT stocks lagged. Both benchmarks are rebounding from an eight-week losing run, the longest in 25 years, that cut the Nifty by 8.7 per cent and the Sensex by 8.4 per cent.

India VIX, the fear gauge, held steady at 14.45 but is up 35.3 per cent in 30 days, so unease remains before Wednesday’s decision.
