Mumbai, Sept 30: Nifty flatlined and Sensex rose on Wednesday even as crude oil climbed. Asia traded mostly higher with Japan’s Nikkei 225 up 1.28 per cent overnight, its steepest single-session gain in weeks. The Sensex and Nifty had fallen for two consecutive sessions through Tuesday, and Wednesday’s move came even as US markets ended slightly lower overnight.
Qatar said on Tuesday it hopes shuttle diplomacy between Iran and the US can produce a breakthrough, even as Trump denied reports he had offered Tehran sanctions relief. Qatari mediators are exchanging messages between the two sides to find common ground, the foreign ministry said, while Trump maintained the war, now in its eighth month, would be over soon. Doha previously helped broker the June memorandum of understanding that led to a brief ceasefire, and US and Iranian officials again spoke separately with Qatari mediators on Monday.
Sensex & Nifty
The BSE Sensex was up 0.3 per cent while the NSE Nifty was up 0.05 per cent. This comes after two straight sessions of losses. Volatility eased in early trade, with the India VIX at 13.35, down 0.44 per cent from the previous close of 13.41. The dip in the fear gauge tracked the steadier mood across Asian markets.
Gift Nifty futures had signalled the firmer start, holding near 22,812.50 in early trade, as strength across Asian bourses and the mediator-led optimism on Iran offset lingering concerns over elevated global bond yields.
Gainers & Losers
Among Nifty 50 stocks, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) led the gainers, rising 2.52 per cent, or Rs 51.30, to a last traded price (LTP) of Rs 2,083.70 from its previous close of Rs 2,032.40. Tech Mahindra (TECHM) gained 2.15 per cent, or Rs 32.50, to a last traded price (LTP) of Rs 1,543 from its previous close of Rs 1,510.50, while InterGlobe Aviation (INDIGO) rose 1.92 per cent, or Rs 93.50, to a last traded price (LTP) of Rs 4,965.50 from its previous close of Rs 4,872, HCL Technologies (HCLTECH) advanced 1.46 per cent, or Rs 17.90, to a last traded price (LTP) of Rs 1,239.90 from its previous close of Rs 1,222 and Trent (TRENT) added 1.25 per cent, or Rs 33, to a last traded price (LTP) of Rs 2,668 from its previous close of Rs 2,635.
On the losing side, Max Healthcare Institute (MAXHEALTH) fell the most, down 3.38 per cent, or Rs -33.20, to a last traded price (LTP) of Rs 948.90 from its previous close of Rs 982.10. Dr Reddy’s Laboratories (DRREDDY) slipped 2.77 per cent, or Rs -34.70, to a last traded price (LTP) of Rs 1,217.20 from its previous close of Rs 1,251.90, while BSE (BSE) declined 2.74 per cent, or Rs -87.80, to a last traded price (LTP) of Rs 3,112.20 from its previous close of Rs 3,200, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (APOLLOHOSP) dropped 2.34 per cent, or Rs -202.50, to a last traded price (LTP) of Rs 8,456.50 from its previous close of Rs 8,659 and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (SUNPHARMA) lost 1.67 per cent, or Rs -31.10, to a last traded price (LTP) of Rs 1,833.90 from its previous close of Rs 1,865.
Broad Market & Sectoral Indices
Broad market indices rallied across the board on Wednesday, with no broad-based index in the red. The Nifty Next 50 led the advance, up 1.25 per cent to 70,325.85, followed by the Nifty Midcap Select, up 1.15 per cent to 13,831.45, and the Nifty Smallcap 100, up 1.04 per cent to 19,394.05. The Nifty 50 itself was the most muted gainer of the broad indices, up just 0.01 per cent.
Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Media led the gainers, up 1.75 per cent to 1,567.85, followed by the Nifty PSU Bank, up 1.67 per cent to 8,106.15, and the Nifty Oil & Gas index, up 1.35 per cent to 10,710.05. The Nifty Financial Services and Nifty Metal indices were also marginally lower, down 0.11 per cent and 0.14 per cent respectively, while the Nifty Chemicals index rallied 2.02 per cent and the Nifty IT rose 1.20 per cent, extending the broad-based nature of Wednesday’s advance.
Iran War
The US and Iran have yet to find an off-ramp from their eighth-month-old war, despite talks intensifying during last week’s UN General Assembly meeting. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Washington had not officially conveyed a rejection of Tehran’s seven-day peace proposal through mediators. Trump has cited preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon as a central war goal, while Tehran maintains it seeks a civilian nuclear programme only and denies pursuing weapons. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Tehran is ready for talks on its nuclear programme and other issues but will not accept “bullying or coercion.” Saudi Arabia has been drawn deeper into the conflict this month as Iran-aligned Houthi fighters advanced in Yemen, threatening Saudi oil exports through the Red Sea.
Asian Markets
Asian markets rallied on Wednesday morning. Japan’s Nikkei 225 surged 1.28 per cent to 66,318.81, Taiwan gained 1.19 per cent to 48,200.74 and Australia’s ASX 200 rose 0.93 per cent to 8,790.60, while New Zealand’s NZX 50 climbed 1 per cent and Malaysia’s benchmark added 0.63 per cent. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng slipped 0.08 per cent to 24,503.38 and South Korea’s KOSPI fell 0.31 per cent, while China’s Shanghai and Shenzhen indices were little changed.
US Markets
US markets ended mixed on Tuesday. The Nasdaq 100 rose 0.21 per cent to 30,339.33 and the utilities index jumped 1.14 per cent to 1,015.93, while the transportation index gained 0.35 per cent to 19,650.37. The NYSE index fell 0.20 per cent to 23,709.60 and the Russell 2000 declined 0.35 per cent to 2,807.92.
Oil Prices
Crude oil prices steadied after Tuesday’s sharp rally. Brent crude was quoted at USD 103.10 a barrel, up a modest 0.5 per cent, while West Texas Intermediate was nearly flat at USD 89.43, according to delayed quotes. Murban crude fell 1.98 per cent to USD 114.63 and the DME Oman contract dropped 4.29 per cent to USD 107.41, while the OPEC basket declined 0.91 per cent to USD 111.75. The pullback follows Tuesday’s gains, when Brent had risen about 1.5 per cent to near USD 107 on Middle East supply concerns.
Indian Markets on Tuesday
The Sensex fell 242.65 points, or 0.33 per cent, to close at 72,529.07 on Tuesday, while the Nifty declined 64.05 points, or 0.28 per cent, to 22,716.20, settling below 22,750 on the monthly expiry day. Market breadth remained weak, with 1,871 shares advancing against 2,321 declines and 164 unchanged, while the Nifty Midcap index fell 0.6 per cent and the Smallcap index declined 0.8 per cent. Sectorally, only media, metal and pharma indices ended higher, while auto, IT and consumer durables declined more than 1 per cent each. The US 10-year Treasury yield had risen to its highest level since July 2007, adding to the pressure on Indian equities.
