New Delhi, Sept 28: Indian gold rates started the week with a steep fall on Monday. The price of 24-karat gold (99.9% purity) stood at Rs 15,017 per gram, while 22-karat (91.6%) gold was priced at Rs 13,765 per gram and 18-karat gold at Rs 11,263 per gram.
The price of 24-karat gold was Rs 267 lower than Friday’s price of Rs 15,284 per gram. This translates into a drop of 1.75% or Rs 2,670 for 10 grams and Rs 26,700 for 100 grams of gold. The price of 22-karat gold decreased by Rs 245 to Rs 13,765 from Rs 14,010, while 18-karat gold fell by Rs 200 to Rs 11,263 per gram from Rs 11,463 per gram. The fall was much steeper than the Rs 152 per gram decline recorded last Thursday. It was also the highest daily drop of the current month.
Since gold rates in India depend on international gold prices, the dollar-rupee exchange rate and the cost of importing gold, we can assume that there was a significant fall in the international market. We saw a rise of Rs 16 per gram in 24-karat gold on Friday after prices had fallen for three consecutive days. On Monday, however, the decline was many times greater than Friday’s increase.
There was an equal fall in gold prices across all 10 cities and all three karats. Delhi had the highest price for 24-karat gold at Rs 15,032 per gram among the 10 cities. Vadodara and Ahmedabad came next at Rs 15,022 per gram, while Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune were at Rs 15,017 per gram. Chennai had a higher rate for 18-karat gold last week, but the difference has now narrowed. Its price is currently Rs 272 higher than Mumbai’s, compared with a difference of Rs 317 on Friday.

Chennai is now at par with Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune in terms of 24-karat and 22-karat gold rates. Only 18-karat gold continues to be more expensive in Chennai. Delhi’s 24-karat gold rate was Rs 15 per gram higher than Mumbai’s and Rs 5 higher than the rates in Vadodara and Ahmedabad. These differences have remained unchanged since Friday.
Please note that these are bullion rates. Jewellery will be more expensive because of making charges, wastage and 3% GST on the value of gold. If you want to invest in gold, you can also buy gold ETFs, which are not subject to purity-related issues:
These rates are subject to change, so please confirm the price with your nearest jeweller or bullion dealer before buying.

It will be interesting to see how prices move over the coming week. The festival season, including Navratri and Diwali, is around the corner. People had started buying gold coins and lightweight jewellery at retail counters last week as prices began falling. With prices at a low on Monday, we might see more people coming forward to buy gold, according to some dealers. Others believe that buyers may wait and watch to see whether the downward trend continues. Wedding buyers will also be affected, as they usually monitor prices a few weeks before their weddings.
