New Delhi, Sept 30: Gold in India snapped its two-session losing streak on Wednesday, with 24 karat gold (99.9% purity) at ₹14,957 per gram in most cities, 22 karat (91.6% purity) at ₹13,710 per gram and 18 karat at ₹11,218 per gram across major cities. The 24K rate is up ₹77 per gram from Tuesday’s ₹14,880 in most cities, a rise of about 0.52 per cent, or ₹770 per 10 grams. The 22K rate climbed ₹70 per gram from ₹13,640, while 18K rose ₹58 per gram from ₹11,160 in most cities, reversing part of the sharp declines seen on Monday and Tuesday.

Gold prices in India track international bullion rates and the dollar-rupee exchange rate, so a bounce after two days of declines typically reflects a stabilising move in global markets. The broader equity market was little changed on Wednesday morning, with the Nifty 50 trading around 22,743, up about 0.13 per cent. Rates are compiled from dealer forums each morning and can be revised as trading progresses.

Nine of the 10 major cities tracked moved higher by the same margin in each purity, with Chennai again the exception, rising by a smaller amount than the rest. Delhi stood out differently: while its 22K and 18K rates rose broadly in line with other cities, its 24K rate of ₹14,894 per gram was barely changed from Tuesday’s ₹14,895, effectively flat even as Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune all jumped to ₹14,957. That divergence means Delhi, which had been the priciest city for 24K gold through the week, has now slipped behind Vadodara and Ahmedabad, which climbed to ₹14,962 per gram, and behind the six-city cluster at ₹14,957.

Chennai’s smaller gains, up ₹490 per 10 grams in 24K against a ₹770 rise elsewhere, ₹450 in 22K against ₹700, and ₹350 in 18K against ₹580, narrowed its usual premium over the rest of the country in 22K and 18K gold even as its 24K rate stayed the highest in the country at ₹14,957. Vadodara and Ahmedabad kept their ₹5 per gram premium over the six-city cluster in 24K gold, a gap that has held steady through the week regardless of the direction the national rate has moved.

Retail buyers should note that these are bullion rates. Jewellery attracts making charges, wastage and 3 per cent GST on the gold value, so the final bill at a jeweller’s counter runs higher than the quoted per-gram rate. Investors seeking exposure to gold without storage or purity concerns can consider Gold ETFs, which track the metal’s price rather than requiring physical delivery. Rates published here are indicative, so dealers advise confirming the final price with a local jeweller or bullion dealer before any purchase.

With Wednesday’s rebound arriving just as the festive season gathers pace, jewellers said the timing could work in their favour, with Navratri only days away. A bounce off two sessions of declines may draw back buyers who had paused purchases expecting prices to fall further, though some in the trade cautioned that a single day’s rise is unlikely to shift sentiment on its own. Wedding-season buyers, who plan purchases weeks ahead, are watching the swings closely, since even modest day-to-day moves compound into a noticeable difference at 50 or 100 grams.

Jewellery Stocks Today

Shares of listed jewellery companies were mixed in mid-morning trade on Wednesday, even as the broader market held largely flat. The Nifty 50 was trading around 22,743, up about 0.13 per cent, with the Nifty 50 USD index up 0.15 per cent and Gift Nifty futures down a marginal 0.09 per cent. PC Jeweller was the standout gainer among the four counters tracked, while Titan Company, Kalyan Jewellers India and Thangamayil Jewellery were all lower.

PC Jeweller extended its recent volatility, opening at ₹13.29 against a previous close of ₹13.23, climbing to a high of ₹13.70, and trading at ₹13.62, up 2.95 per cent and just above its VWAP of ₹13.57. The counter continued to see extremely heavy turnover, with total traded quantity crossing 6.8 crore shares, though sell orders still made up 55.75 per cent of the total quantity even as the stock closed the morning higher.

Titan Company opened at ₹4,683.00 against a previous close of ₹4,675.00, touched a high of ₹4,698.00 early on, then slipped through the morning to a low of ₹4,635.00 before settling at ₹4,641.50, down 0.72 per cent and below its VWAP of ₹4,660.00. Kalyan Jewellers India opened at ₹572.00 against a previous close of ₹568.85, briefly touched a high of ₹572.05, then fell steadily through the session to a low of ₹558.40 before trading at ₹560.30, down 1.50 per cent and below its VWAP of ₹565.62.

Thangamayil Jewellery opened at ₹5,210.50 against a previous close of ₹5,204.50, reached a high of ₹5,240.00, then reversed sharply to a low of ₹5,150.00 and was trading at ₹5,159.00, down 0.87 per cent and well below its VWAP of ₹5,192.36. The stock’s slide from an early gain to a fresh intraday low mirrored the pattern seen in Kalyan Jewellers, even as both companies’ underlying business, gold and diamond jewellery retail, would typically benefit from a firmer gold price.

Market watchers said the split outcome, with PC Jeweller sharply higher while the other three retailers slipped, points to stock-specific positioning rather than a clean read-through from gold’s rebound. PC Jeweller’s climb to a fresh high and its outsized turnover stood out as the session’s most notable move, while Kalyan Jewellers’ steady slide from its opening levels to a fresh intraday low was the weakest performance among the four.

Order book data showed selling pressure dominated on three of the four counters. Sell orders made up 61.38 per cent of total quantity on Kalyan Jewellers India and 77.35 per cent on

Thangamayil Jewellery, the highest sell-side skew of the group, while PC Jeweller saw 55.75 per cent sell-side quantity despite ending the morning higher. Titan Company was the only counter close to balanced, with buy orders marginally ahead at 50.16 per cent of total quantity.
