Mumbai, Sept 2: HDFC Bank Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sashidhar Jagdishan has decided not to seek reappointment and will retire from the bank at the close of business on October 26, 2026, when his current term ends. The bank announced the decision on August 30 and said its board has fast-tracked the process of appointing his successor, beginning the next phase of its leadership transition.
Board Begins Succession Process Ahead of October Transition
HDFC Bank’s board has accelerated the succession process to ensure that a new CEO is appointed before Jagdishan’s current term concludes. The transition will mark a change in leadership at India’s largest private-sector bank after Jagdishan’s long association with the lender.
The board acknowledged Jagdishan’s leadership and contribution to the bank during his tenure. His decision follows a career spanning nearly three decades at HDFC Bank, during which he held several senior positions before becoming CEO.
Jagdishan’s 30 Years at HDFC Bank Included Finance and 2023 Merger
Jagdishan, 61, joined HDFC Bank in 1996 as a manager in the finance division. He became the finance head in 1999 and was subsequently appointed Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in 2008. He later took over as Managing Director and CEO in October 2020.
His tenure included the completion of the merger between HDFC Bank and HDFC Ltd in 2023. The transaction brought HDFC Ltd’s housing finance business into HDFC Bank and marked a significant milestone in the bank’s development. The board recognised Jagdishan’s contribution to the successful completion of the merger.
Q1 Profit Rose 5% to ₹19,060 Crore as Loans Grew
HDFC Bank reported a 5% year-on-year increase in standalone net profit to ₹19,060 crore for the quarter ended June 2026, compared with ₹18,155 crore in the corresponding quarter a year earlier. The performance was supported by growth in the bank’s lending operations and a substantial reduction in provisions and contingencies, according to Q1 report.
Total advances increased during the quarter, supported by continued growth across retail lending segments, including housing loans and personal loans. Deposits also expanded, strengthening the bank’s deposit base and supporting its lending operations.
Net interest income rose 6.7% year-on-year to around ₹33,536 crore. The bank’s net interest margin stood at 3.26% during the quarter. Provisions and contingencies declined 78% year-on-year to ₹3,060 crore from ₹14,441 crore in the year-earlier period.
Leadership Transition Follows Continued Business Expansion
Jagdishan’s retirement will bring an end to his nearly 30-year association with HDFC Bank, spanning its growth from his early finance roles to his leadership as CEO. His tenure also included the integration of HDFC Ltd following the 2023 merger and the continued expansion of the bank’s lending and deposit operations.
With the succession process now under way, HDFC Bank will move towards appointing its next CEO before October 26, 2026. The appointment will mark the beginning of a new leadership phase for the bank following Jagdishan’s tenure.
