In a major step towards globalising Indian systems of traditional medicine, the Ministry of Ayush has signed a landmark agreement with the World Health Organization (WHO) for developing detailed  International Statistical Classification of Health Interventions (ICHI) pertaining to Traditional Medicine.

The decision, which came during the 122nd Mann Ki Baat of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, would lead to greater global recognition, easy access, and perception of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Unani Treatment Centre, etc, and scientific validation for treatments like Panchakarma, Yoga therapy, and Unani regimens, as also Siddha procedures. “This venture will aid in propagating Ayush in the entire world scientifically,” PM Modi added.

Key Highlights of the Agreement

  • Integration with ICHI: The new module complements WHO’s ICD-11 and will codify interventions across traditional medicine practices.
  • Improved Health Systems Integration:
    • Transparent billing and pricing for Ayush services.
    • Inclusion in global health insurance frameworks.
    • Better clinical documentation and research outcomes.
  • $3 Million Indian Contribution: Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the WHO, also announced a $3 million contribution from India to this joint projects on traditional medicine.

“Delighted to sign an agreement for a $3M contribution from #India to @WHO’s work on traditional medicine and the International Classification of Health Interventions,” Dr. Tedros posted on social media.

Strategic Impact

This partnership will project India’s Ayush systems as a part of global health care.” Through scientific codification with ICHI, these practices are expected to become policy relevant and contribute to the overarching goal of affordable and accessible healthcare for all around the world.

Outlook

It is a breakthrough for Indian traditional medicine that Ayush is included in international health classification. Supported by global benchmarks, the initiative is seeking to incorporate India’s traditional knowledge in the modern healthcare system by means of evidence-based development and trust amongst international community in traditional systems of medicine.
