A trade agreement between India and the United States could be on the cards sooner than expected, according to US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, who expressed strong optimism about ongoing negotiations between the two nations.

Speaking at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit, Lutnick stated, “You should expect a deal between the United States and India in the not-too-distant future because I think we found a place that really works for both countries.” He noted that the right representatives from both sides are finally at the table, fostering meaningful progress.

Positive Momentum for Bilateral Trade Ties

Lutnick emphasized that both India and the US have reached a stage where cooperation is no longer hindered by prolonged bureaucracy. “These kinds of deals used to take two or three years, and we’re trying to get them done in a month,” he said, underlining the urgency and efficiency being applied to the process.

He noted that early engagement leads to better terms, and India is actively working to be among the first to finalize the agreement. The US is aiming for improved market access and reduced trade deficits, while India is seeking privileged access to American markets.

Tariff Barriers and Mutual Adjustments

Lutnick acknowledged that India has traditionally imposed high import tariffs. He said US President Donald Trump has been clear about tackling such protectionist measures. He pointed to examples like 100 percent tariffs on some products and stressed the need for a fairer system that supports true trade partnerships.

“The idea is to bring tariffs down to a level that is reasonable and appropriate so we can be great trading partners,” Lutnick remarked, framing the current efforts as stress-free and focused on crafting a “proper trading relationship.”

Strategic Alignment and Candid Diplomacy

Lutnick also discussed the evolving geopolitical relationship between India and the US. While he pointed out past issues, such as India’s military purchases from Russia and its membership in BRICS, he appreciated India’s ongoing steps to realign these positions in a way that resonates better with American interests.

Referring to India’s previous military deals with Russia, Lutnick commented, “That’s a way to kind of get under the skin of America,” but acknowledged that India is gradually shifting towards US-made defense equipment.

On BRICS initiatives, particularly those seen as challenging the dominance of the US dollar, Lutnick said the Indian government has been clear in distancing itself from any such agendas.

Strong Leadership Ties Enabling Progress

Lutnick also highlighted the unique leadership bond between the two nations. “It is very rare in today’s world to have both leaders President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly elected by the people,” he noted, calling this a “pretty unique” connection that provides a strong foundation for trade negotiations.

With both governments showing a willingness to address sensitive issues head-on, Lutnick concluded that the environment is ripe for a breakthrough. “Put it on the table, address it straight on, resolve it straight on, and get to a really good place. And I think that’s where we are.”
