Indian equity markets end sharply in red today ; M & M, Maruti shares among top gainers

After the gains of the past few days, Indian equity markets ended the day sharply in red today, 22nd August, 2025. Nifty 50 ended the day today, down by 213.5 points or 0.85%. Sensex ended the day, down by 693.86 points or 0.85%.
Top Gainers & Losers
Top 3 gainers at Nifty 50 today were Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti and BEL. Top 3 losers were Grasim, Asian Paint, and Adani Enterprises. Auto stocks saw some gains today.
Market sentiments also got some hit by the passing of the online gaming bill in Parliament, yesterday. This bill completely bans all types of online games that involve money. The ban will hit many sectors of the economy, including the software & IT sector. It may result in significant loss of tax revenue for the government. According to one study, around 200,000 jobs will be lost, directly and indirectly, because of this ban.
Decline was broad-based today
The decline in Indian equity markets was broad-based today. All the broader market indices, ended the day in red today. Nifty 100 index was the top loser among broad market indices today. It ended the day, down by 0.82%.
Among sectoral indices, Nifty Media index was the top gainer today. It ended the day, up by 0.95%. One reason for this increase was the sharp increase in Zee Entertainment’s share price today. Zee’s stock ended the day today, up by 4.94% at Rs 122.90.
Among sectoral indices, Nifty Metal index was the top loser today. It ended the day, down by 1.25%. Private bank stocks and PSU bank stocks also saw selling pressure today.
Market breadth heavily negative today
Market breadth was heavily negative today. At NSE, 1178 stocks advanced in the day. 1762 stocks declined in the day.
