Mumbai, October 21: Indian equity benchmark indices ended lower for a second consecutive session on Wednesday, reversing early gains as elevated crude oil prices and broad-based selling weighed on investor sentiment. The Nifty 50 fell 77.60 points, or 0.34%, to close at 22,811.35, while the Sensex declined 143.21 points, or 0.19%, to settle at 73,709.69.
The benchmarks had risen around 1% in early trade, supported by gains in information technology stocks and Reliance Industries as Jio Platforms’ much-anticipated initial public offering (IPO) opened for subscription. However, the early optimism faded as investors turned cautious amid elevated crude oil prices and concerns over their implications for India’s economy.
Market Breadth Remains Weak
Market breadth remained firmly negative, with 3,361 stocks declining on the NSE, compared with 884 advancing and 157 remaining unchanged. The weakness extended to broader markets, with the Nifty Midcap and Nifty Smallcap indices falling more than 2% each.
The decline in midcap and smallcap shares highlighted the extent of selling pressure beyond frontline stocks, despite relative resilience in the IT sector.
IT Stocks Outperform; Bajaj Finance, Eicher Motors Among Losers
The Nifty IT index rose 2.9%, emerging as the session’s standout performer. Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and HCL Technologies were among the key gainers on the Nifty, while UltraTech Cement also advanced.
In contrast, Bajaj Finance, Eicher Motors, Eternal, BSE and Bajaj Auto were among the major losers. Auto, consumer durables, energy, media, metal, pharma, realty and private banking indices declined between 1% and 2%, reflecting widespread selling pressure across sectors.
Crude Oil Prices Weigh On Sentiment
Elevated crude oil prices remained a key concern for investors, with Brent crude trading above $110 per barrel amid geopolitical tensions and concerns over shipping routes and oil infrastructure. Higher oil prices pose risks to India’s import bill, inflation outlook, the rupee and corporate profitability, given the country’s dependence on imported crude.
The rise in oil prices also threatens to complicate the inflation outlook and limit the scope for monetary easing, keeping investors cautious amid an uncertain global environment.
Jio Platforms IPO Attracts Strong Demand
Jio Platforms‘ ₹30,213-crore IPO remained a key market focus. The offering, India’s largest public issue to date and Reliance Industries’ return to the IPO market after two decades, was fully subscribed within less than two hours of opening on Wednesday. The issue is priced in a band of ₹1,065-1,119 per share and will remain open until October 23.
The strong investor response kept Reliance Industries and telecom-related stocks in focus. Vodafone Idea remained under pressure, falling 5.2% as investors assessed the competitive implications of Jio’s public listing and its position against better-capitalised rivals. Bharti Airtel edged 0.9% higher.
India-US Trade Deal In Focus
Optimism over a potential India-US trade agreement had offered some support to investor sentiment earlier in the session. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he expected Washington and New Delhi to reach an agreement within weeks rather than months. However, the prospect of a trade breakthrough failed to sustain the morning rally as concerns over crude oil prices and broad-based selling dominated trade.
What Lies Ahead?
Investors will track September-quarter earnings, foreign institutional investor flows, crude oil prices and developments in India-US trade negotiations for further cues. With market breadth weak and broader indices underperforming, sustained buying in IT stocks and any moderation in crude oil prices could prove important for a recovery in the coming sessions.
