Mumbai, July 24: Shares of InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, fell as much as 2.5% on Friday as investors digested the airline’s June-quarter loss and assessed the impact of a sharp rise in crude oil prices amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The stock came under pressure after the airline’s quarterly performance fell short of expectations, while higher aviation turbine fuel costs raised concerns over margins and profitability.
The decline in IndiGo shares came a day after the airline reported a net loss of ₹238 crore for the June quarter, compared with a net profit of ₹2,176 crore in the same period a year earlier. Revenue from operations, however, increased nearly 20% year-on-year to ₹24,584 crore. As of writing the stock was down 1.5% at Rs 4,950.
Q1 Loss Reverses Strong Profit In Year-Ago Quarter
IndiGo’s quarterly loss highlighted the impact of a challenging operating environment. The airline’s performance was affected by higher costs and geopolitical uncertainty, with the sharp rise in crude oil prices emerging as a key concern for the aviation sector.
Yield, a key measure of the revenue generated per passenger, improved 21% to ₹6, providing some support to the airline’s revenue performance.
Oil Prices Emerge As Fresh Headwind

The sharp increase in crude oil prices has added to concerns around IndiGo’s near-term profitability. Brent crude prices have moved towards the $100-a-barrel mark as escalating tensions in the Middle East raised fears of disruptions to global oil supplies.

Fuel is among the largest operating expenses for airlines, making the sector particularly vulnerable to sustained increases in crude prices. Higher jet fuel costs can quickly put pressure on margins, especially when airlines are unable to fully pass on higher expenses through ticket prices.
The latest oil price shock has therefore emerged as a fresh challenge for IndiGo, which is already navigating a difficult operating environment following its weak quarterly performance.
Investors are likely to closely monitor the trajectory of crude prices and geopolitical developments in the Middle East, with a prolonged period of elevated oil prices potentially weighing further on the airline’s earnings.
Brokers Retain Buy Despite Estimate Cuts
Despite the near-term pressure, brokerages retained ‘Buy’ rating on IndiGo shares, although they lowered earnings estimates to account for higher fuel costs and a more challenging operating environment.
The brokerages’ continued positive stance indicates that they remain constructive on IndiGo’s longer-term growth prospects despite the immediate pressure on profitability. The airline’s strong market position, expanding network and healthy balance sheet are expected to remain key positives for the stock.
The brokerages’ decision to retain Buy recommendation also suggests that the recent weakness in the stock may be viewed as a near-term earnings setback rather than a fundamental deterioration in the airline’s long-term outlook.
Investors will now track crude prices, passenger demand, capacity additions and aircraft deliveries for clues on the airline’s earnings trajectory. The pace at which the company can absorb higher fuel costs without significantly affecting margins will also remain a key focus.
Overall, IndiGo shares face a near-term overhang from the June-quarter loss and elevated crude prices. However, strong revenue growth, a robust cash position and the airline’s long-term expansion strategy could provide support, with Buy rating signalling continued confidence in the company’s structural growth story despite the current earnings pressure.
