Mumbai, August 20: Indian equity benchmarks snapped a losing streak on Thursday, August 20, with the Nifty reclaiming 24,200 and the Sensex gaining 628 points as broad-based buying and easing global bond-market concerns lifted sentiment. The rebound came after seven consecutive sessions of losses for Nifty, with investors taking comfort from a stabilisation in global bond markets and gains in IT and financial stocks.
At close, the Sensex was up 628.04 points, or 0.82%, at 77,537.72, while the Nifty gained 153.55 points, or 0.64%, to 24,231.85. Market breadth remained positive, with 2,367 shares advancing, 1,778 declining and 173 unchanged on the NSE.
Why Did The Market Rise Today?
The recovery was supported by improving global risk sentiment after the US Treasury announced plans to double the size of its buybacks of longer-duration debt. The move helped calm global bond markets after a recent surge in long-term yields had raised concerns over borrowing costs and inflation.
The easing in global bond yields provided relief to equity markets, particularly interest-rate-sensitive sectors.
Positive cues from Asian markets added to the favourable backdrop. The broader Asian market gains followed the stabilisation in global bond markets.
IT, Financial Stocks Lead Recovery
Buying was visible across sectors, with IT and financial stocks among the key drivers of the rebound. The Nifty IT index extended its recovery on Thursday, rising 0.8% and taking its gains over the past two sessions to 1.5%. The rebound came after the index had declined nearly 4% across the preceding three sessions.
Financial stocks advanced 0.7%.
At the close, Eternal, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bajaj Finance, ITC and Shriram Finance were among the biggest Nifty gainers.
On the other hand, Hindalco Industries, Bharat Electronics, Tata Consumer Products, InterGlobe Aviation and Nestle India ended among the top losers
Most Sectoral Indices End In Green
The recovery was broad-based, with 14 of 16 sectoral indices ending in the green.
The Nifty Media index gained 2%, emerging as the best-performing sector, while the Realty index rose 1.4%. Auto, FMCG, pharma, IT, private bank and infrastructure indices also advanced between 0.4% and 0.8%.
The broad-based gains indicated a return of risk appetite after the market’s recent selloff, although investors remain cautious about the sustainability of the rebound.
Midcap, Smallcap Stocks Also Gain
The broader market also participated in the recovery. The Nifty Midcap index rose 0.4%, while the Nifty Smallcap index gained 0.7%.
Market breadth remained positive, with advancing stocks comfortably outnumbering declining counters on the NSE. The gains across mid- and small-cap stocks indicated that buying interest extended beyond the benchmark heavyweights.
Gold, Financial Stocks In Focus
Among individual stocks, gold financiers Manappuram Finance and Muthoot Finance also attracted attention after gaining in response to higher gold prices. They gained 2.7% and 3.9%, respectively.
Turtlemint Fintech also rose after a broker initiated coverage with a positive outlook.
What Next For Indian Markets?
Thursday’s rebound provided some relief after the Nifty’s seven-session losing streak, but investors are likely to watch whether the recovery can sustain over the coming sessions.
The near-term market direction will depend on global bond yields, crude oil prices, foreign fund flows, rupee movement and geopolitical developments. While the US Treasury’s intervention has temporarily eased pressure in global bond markets, concerns around elevated oil prices and inflation remain.
For now, the combination of easing bond-market stress, stronger global cues and buying in IT and financial stocks has helped Indian equities break their prolonged losing streak and reclaim the 24,200 level.
