Mumbai, October 19: Indian equity benchmark indices snapped their two-day winning streak on Monday, October 19, as losses in private sector banks and information technology stocks dragged the market lower, with elevated crude oil prices adding to investor caution. The Sensex plunged 876.37 points, or 1.17%, to close at 73,852.90, while the Nifty 50 declined 257.20 points, or 1.11%, to settle at 22,888.95.
The sell-off came after both benchmarks had rallied around 3% last week, marking their strongest weekly performances in six months. Investors booked profits following the sharp gains, while quarterly earnings from major private lenders, oil prices and global uncertainties weighed on sentiment. The Nifty’s weekly derivatives expiry also pushed volatility to its highest level in a week.
Market breadth was firmly negative, with 2,925 shares declining, 1,163 advancing and 181 remaining unchanged. The Nifty Midcap index fell around 1.1%, while the Smallcap index shed 1%.
Private banks, IT stocks lead losses
The Nifty Private Bank index fell around 1.9%, with Axis Bank among the biggest drags on the benchmark indices. Axis Bank plunged 4.2% after its September-quarter profit narrowly missed analyst expectations, as higher operating expenses and weaker other income offset robust credit growth and lower provisions.
The sell-off in private lenders came despite ICICI Bank reporting a better-than-expected quarterly profit, supported by loan growth and lower provisions for bad loans. ICICI Bank declined 1.15%. Analysts also attributed the broader weakness in banking stocks to profit-taking after last week’s rally.
The Nifty IT index fell 1.3%, giving back some of the previous session’s 3.9% gain. LTIMindtree dropped 2.8% after its September-quarter profit missed forecasts, despite revenue growth supported by its consumer and technology businesses. The FMCG index also declined 1.4%.
PSU banks buck broader market trend
The Nifty PSU Bank index was the only major sectoral index to finish in the green, rising 2.5% as strong quarterly earnings and improving asset quality lifted public sector lenders.
Punjab National Bank surged 4.8% after reporting a 13% year-on-year increase in September-quarter net profit to Rs 5,532 crore. Net interest income rose 11% to Rs 11,601 crore, while its gross non-performing asset ratio improved by 90 basis points to 2.55%.
Union Bank of India jumped 5.3% after reporting higher quarterly profit and an improvement in asset quality. Other Nifty gainers included JSW Steel, Eicher Motors, State Bank of India, Larsen & Toubro and ONGC.
Among the other major losers were Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Bajaj Finance, Trent and Infosys. UltraTech Cement fell 2.4% after its quarterly profit missed analysts’ estimates.
Yes Bank, PC Jeweller in focus
Yes Bank declined 3.5% as investors weighed stronger-than-expected September-quarter earnings against the potential financial fallout from the Supreme Court’s ruling that set aside the lender’s 2020 write-off of Rs 8,400 crore additional tier-1 (AT1) bonds.
PC Jeweller surged 11.4%, extending its recent rally after Cupid chairman and managing director Aditya Kumar Halwasiya acquired a stake in the company. Vodafone Idea fell 2.5% after announcing the appointment of Manoj Murali as its chief operating officer, effective October 19.
Crude oil, Jio Platforms IPO in focus
Crude oil prices remained elevated amid persistent tensions in the Middle East, despite easing after US President Donald Trump waived certain sanctions on Russia, potentially allowing additional fuel supplies into the market. Brent crude traded around $108 a barrel, keeping concerns over India’s import bill, inflation and currency under pressure.
Investors will now turn their attention to the September-quarter earnings calendar and the upcoming Jio Platforms IPO, which opens for subscription on Wednesday. Indian financial markets will remain closed on Tuesday for a holiday.
