Mumbai, August 3: Shares of Maruti Suzuki India fell as much as 2.2% on Monday after the country’s largest carmaker reported a sharp sequential decline in operating margins for the June quarter. The stock came under pressure as higher commodity costs weighed on profitability, although brokerages remained positive on the company’s longer-term growth prospects and pointed to an expected recovery in margins in the coming quarters. As of writing the stock pared losses to trade 0.5% lower at Rs 14,142.
Q1 Profit Falls 11%
Maruti Suzuki reported a standalone net profit of ₹3,352 crore for the April-June quarter, down around 11% from a year ago. The decline came despite strong revenue growth, with higher input costs putting pressure on the bottom line.
The company’s revenue rose 36% year-on-year, supported by strong vehicle volumes and robust domestic demand. Total sales volumes increased 29.3% to a record 6,82,724 units during the quarter, while domestic sales jumped 41.2%.
Margins Under Pressure
The key concern for investors was the sharp slide in profitability. Maruti Suzuki’s operating margin fell to 5.1% in the June quarter from 8.8% in the previous quarter.

Higher commodity costs were a major drag on profitability, with rising aluminium prices and the company’s decision to shift from quarterly to monthly commodity-cost settlements contributing to the margin pressure. The impact of higher input costs was compounded by the broader disruption caused by the Iran conflict.
The company, however, expects margins to improve over the coming quarters as commodity costs ease and pricing arrangements with suppliers are revised. Maruti has also maintained its annual sales growth outlook at around 10%, signalling confidence in the underlying demand environment.
Brokerages See Recovery Ahead
Despite the near-term margin weakness, brokerages remain constructive on Maruti Suzuki’s medium-term outlook. Analysts expect the company’s profitability to improve as input-cost pressures moderate and the benefits of strong volumes begin to flow through.
The company’s robust domestic demand is another key positive. Recent tax cuts have helped stimulate demand, particularly for small cars and SUVs, while the automaker’s strong product pipeline and capacity expansion plans could support further volume growth.
However, analysts are also watching the pace of production ramp-up at Maruti’s new manufacturing facilities. Supply constraints could limit the company’s ability to fully capitalise on strong demand in the near term.
Target Prices In Focus
Brokerages have maintained a positive view on the stock despite the Q1 margin miss, with several analysts highlighting the potential for a recovery in earnings as cost pressures ease.
The brokerage outlook is centred on Maruti’s strong volume momentum, improving demand conditions and expectations of a gradual recovery in operating margins. Analysts are also factoring in the company’s product launches and capacity expansion as potential catalysts for future growth.
Investors, however, will continue to track commodity prices closely, given their direct impact on margins. The pace at which Maruti can pass on higher costs through vehicle price increases will also remain important.
Stock Outlook
The immediate pressure on Maruti Suzuki shares reflects investor disappointment over the weak margin performance in the June quarter. However, the company’s record sales volumes and strong domestic demand have reinforced expectations that the current margin weakness could be temporary.
With the company expecting profitability to improve as commodity costs soften, the focus will now shift to whether the recovery materialises over the next few quarters. A sustained improvement in margins, combined with robust demand and higher production capacity, could support the bullish brokerage view on the stock.
For now, the market appears to be balancing near-term earnings pressure against the prospect of a stronger operating performance ahead. The trajectory of commodity costs, production ramp-up and demand for Maruti’s newer models will remain key factors in determining the stock’s next move.
