Mumbai, October 1: Indian equity benchmarks extended their losing streak to an eighth consecutive week on Thursday, their longest such run in 25 years, as persistent foreign investor selling, elevated crude oil prices and a surge in global bond yields weighed on sentiment. The Nifty 50 fell 0.88%, while the Sensex declined 0.79% in a holiday-shortened week.

Sensex, Nifty extend losing streak

The Sensex fell 570.59 points, or 0.79%, to close at 71,909.70, while the Nifty declined 198.50 points, or 0.88%, to 22,421.95. The Nifty lost 3.1% this week, while the Sensex fell 2.7%, marking their steepest weekly declines in more than six and four months, respectively. Over the eight-week losing run, the two indices have fallen 8.7% and 8.4%, respectively.

Market breadth remained firmly negative, with 2,916 stocks declining against 1,306 advancing, while 191 were unchanged. The Nifty Midcap index fell 1.1%, while the Smallcap index declined nearly 1%.

Auto, metal stocks lead sectoral decline

Auto, Media, FMCG, Infrastructure, Metal, Consumer Durables and Realty indices fell between 2% and 3%, while Energy, Pharma, PSU Bank and Oil & Gas indices declined more than 1% each.

The Nifty IT index was the standout performer, gaining 2.2%, while Telecom advanced 0.5%. IT stocks have held up better this week after softer-than-expected US inflation data reduced expectations of another Federal Reserve rate hike in October. The IT index was the only major sector to post a weekly gain, rising 0.5%.

Among individual stocks, Bajaj Auto, Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra, Adani Enterprises and Adani Ports were among the biggest Nifty losers. HDFC Life, SBI Life Insurance, HDFC Bank, Infosys and TCS were among the gainers.

Foreign selling, oil and yields weigh

Foreign investor outflows remained a major drag on Indian equities. FPIs sold Indian shares worth Rs 10,148 crore on Wednesday, taking their total selling for the year to around $27.8 billion. They have offloaded about $3.6 billion over the past five sessions.

Brent crude, meanwhile, reclaimed the $100-a-barrel mark, adding to concerns for oil-importing economies such as India. Earlier in the day, crude had eased towards $98 on hopes of progress in US-Iran ceasefire talks, offering some relief to markets. The subsequent rise in oil prices added to pressure on inflation, the rupee and corporate margins.

Global bond yields also remained elevated, with the US 10-year Treasury yield rising to 5.34%, its highest level since 2002. Higher US yields make emerging-market assets relatively less attractive to foreign investors and have compounded pressure from sustained FPI selling.

The rupee fell to its weakest level in two months. Indian markets will remain closed on Friday for a local holiday.
