August 12, 2025: Japan’s Nikkei 225 average reached to a record high of 42,718.17, rising about 2.15%% on Monday. This breaks the previous high of 42,426.77 that the index reached almost a year back in July 2024. The high came riding on the back of strong gains in technology stocks and renewed investor optimism.

Driving Factors behind the rally

The market has been favourable to the tech sector, particularly from companies tied to artificial intelligence growth, which is the major driving force behind the rally. Showcasing positive investor sentiment for the industry, even the benchmark index broke past previous peaks, marking a significant milestone for the Tokyo stock market. Further, the yen being a weaker currency also boosted exporter shares as it made Japanese goods more competitive overseas and attracted global investors.

Major Stocks that added Momentum

SoftBank Group also emerged as a key driver in the rally. The group benefited from optimism in AI-linked businesses and a positive earnings outlook, being one of the top gainers. Gains in other major Japanese technology stocks also added to the positive momentum. On a broader scale, the Asian market showed mixed performance, with Japan outpacing regional peers.

As the Nikkie 225 rises, reaching a new high and breaking its own records, it is still important to take caution to action. The index hinges on several factors that must be closely monitored for any changes that can severely impact growth. The first thing to look out for is the currency fluctuations, especially yen movements, as its weakness is a crucial aspect for favourable exports and any movement in it can impact export competitiveness. Another thing to observe closely is the corporate earnings in the technology and export-oriented sectors, along with global demand trends for semiconductors and AI technologies, as any negative movement there can tank the index.
