Mumbai, July 23: Fuel prices remained largely stable across major Indian cities, with petrol and diesel rates unchanged in most metros. However, some cities recorded notable revisions, with Chandigarh seeing the sharpest decline in both petrol and diesel prices, while Bhubaneswar and Patna reported increases.

Oil prices climbed to a six-week high on Thursday as escalating tensions between the United States and Iran raised concerns over potential disruptions to crude supplies, while investors assessed the risk of a wider conflict in the Middle East.

Brent crude futures rose 1.6% to trade at $95.5 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude gained 1% at $97.7 a barrel, extending a recent rally. The gains came as geopolitical tensions intensified and markets grew increasingly concerned about the security of energy shipments through the region.

The latest rise in oil prices adds to inflationary pressures facing the global economy, particularly for major crude importers such as India. A prolonged surge in energy costs could widen India’s trade deficit, weigh on the rupee and raise input costs for businesses, potentially complicating the outlook for domestic inflation.

Markets are also watching the potential impact on global monetary policy. Higher oil prices could make it more difficult for central banks to ease interest rates if rising energy costs feed into broader inflation, while elevated bond yields could weigh on risk assets.

The jump in crude prices has also supported energy stocks, while increasing geopolitical uncertainty has boosted demand for traditional safe-haven assets. Investors are likely to closely track further developments between Washington and Tehran, with any disruption to oil production or shipping routes potentially triggering another sharp move in crude prices.
