Mumbai, July 27: Fuel prices remained mixed across major Indian cities and state capitals on Monday, with petrol and diesel rates showing notable movements in Mumbai and Hyderabad, while prices in Delhi remained unchanged. Petrol prices increased by ₹1.19 a litre in Mumbai, while diesel rose by ₹1.20. In contrast, Hyderabad recorded the steepest declines among the cities tracked, with petrol prices falling ₹1.38 and diesel rates dropping ₹1.40. Petrol prices in New Delhi remained unchanged at ₹102.12 a litre, while diesel was steady at ₹95.20. Fuel prices also moved marginally across several other cities, including Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Gurgaon, Noida, Jaipur and Lucknow, reflecting a mixed trend in retail fuel rates across the country.
Oil prices fell sharply on Monday after the United States and Iran paused military strikes over the weekend, raising hopes that diplomatic efforts could help de-escalate the conflict and eventually restore oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
Brent crude futures fell 4.5% to $92.4 a barrel, after briefly slipping below the key $90-a-barrel level. US West Texas Intermediate crude was down 4.8% at $85 a barrel. Both benchmarks were trading at their lowest levels in nearly a week after gaining for the previous three weeks.
Oil prices had earlier climbed to around $100 a barrel as the conflict disrupted shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and spilled over into the Red Sea, affecting exports from Saudi Arabia through the Bab el-Mandeb strait towards Asia. The US ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, said President Donald Trump had paused US attacks to allow more time for diplomacy, providing markets with a fresh sign of a possible easing in tensions.
However, the recovery in oil flows could be gradual. Fewer than 10 commodity vessels passed through the Strait of Hormuz each day over the weekend, according to Kpler data, while shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb also slowed after Yemen’s Houthis attacked Saudi oil installations along the Red Sea coast. Analysts said shippers may remain cautious until they have greater confidence about the safety of the key waterways.
The decline in crude prices could ease concerns over global inflation and provide some relief to oil-importing economies such as India. Lower energy costs could also support the rupee and reduce pressure on corporate margins. However, continued disruptions to Middle Eastern shipping, the wider regional conflict and attacks on Russian oil infrastructure could keep supply risks elevated and limit the downside in crude prices.
