Mumbai, October 8: Petrol and diesel prices remained largely unchanged across major Indian cities on Thursday, October 8, with most metros recording no daily revision. However, fuel prices moved in a few cities, with Hyderabad and Jaipur seeing increases while Noida and Thiruvananthapuram recorded declines.

Oil prices rose on Thursday as mounting attacks on shipping in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz renewed concerns over supply disruptions from the key Middle East producing region.

Brent crude futures rose 2% to $102.3 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude gained 1.8% to $89.9 a barrel. The gains came a day after prices settled lower following the International Energy Agency’s decision to accelerate the release of oil stocks and prioritise diesel supplies under an existing plan.

However, concerns over the safety of oil shipments have intensified, with tanker attacks in the Strait of Hormuz reaching their highest level last week since the Iran war began. The waterway handled shipments equivalent to about 20% of global oil and fuel supplies before the conflict. A tanker north of Qatar was struck by multiple projectiles in the latest incident, causing casualties.

The supply concerns come even as Gulf producers continue to export crude, with shipments recovering in September. Analysts said producers appear willing to accept higher risks and costs to keep supplies moving as the region has limited alternatives for getting oil to international markets. The IEA’s reserve release could provide temporary relief, but it does not add new production capacity.

US inventory data also supported oil prices, with crude stockpiles falling by 3.2 million barrels in the week ended October 2, compared with expectations for a 1.7-million-barrel decline. Distillate inventories, including diesel and jet fuel, also fell and remained well below typical seasonal levels.

For India, a sustained rise in crude prices remains a concern given the country’s dependence on imported oil. Higher energy costs can widen the import bill, put pressure on the rupee and complicate the inflation outlook, particularly after the Reserve Bank of India raised its repo rate and shifted its stance to calibrated tightening.

Petrol Prices

Petrol prices remained unchanged in most major Indian cities, with New Delhi at Rs 102.12 per litre, Kolkata at Rs 113.51, Mumbai at Rs 111.21 and Chennai at Rs 107.76. Prices were also steady in Gurgaon at Rs 102.97, Bengaluru at Rs 111.68, Bhubaneswar at Rs 108.97 and Chandigarh at Rs 101.54 per litre.

Among other major cities, petrol was priced at Rs 101.89 per litre in Noida, down Rs 0.07, while Lucknow remained unchanged at Rs 101.86. Hyderabad had one of the highest prices at Rs 116.15 per litre, up Rs 0.46, followed by Jaipur at Rs 113.19, up Rs 0.53.

Petrol prices also remained unchanged in Patna at Rs 113.37 per litre and in Thiruvananthapuram at Rs 114.80, although the latter saw a decline of Rs 0.69.

Overall, prices were largely stable across major metros and state capitals, with only a few cities recording notable daily movements. Hyderabad and Jaipur witnessed increases, while Thiruvananthapuram recorded the sharpest decline among the cities listed.

Diesel Prices

Diesel prices remained unchanged across most major Indian cities, with New Delhi at Rs 95.20 per litre, Kolkata at Rs 99.82, Mumbai at Rs 97.83 and Chennai at Rs 99.55. Prices also remained steady in Gurgaon at Rs 95.64, Bengaluru at Rs 99.56, Bhubaneswar at Rs 100.68 and Chandigarh at Rs 89.47 per litre.

In Noida, diesel was priced at Rs 95.37 per litre, down Rs 0.07 from the previous level. Lucknow and Patna recorded unchanged prices at Rs 95.36 and Rs 99.36 per litre, respectively.

Hyderabad and Jaipur recorded increases in diesel prices, with rates rising Rs 0.41 to Rs 104.23 per litre and Rs 0.47 to Rs 98.25 per litre, respectively. Hyderabad continued to have one of the highest diesel prices among the cities listed.

Thiruvananthapuram recorded the sharpest decline, with diesel prices falling Rs 0.76 to Rs 103.64 per litre. Overall, diesel prices remained largely stable across major metros and state capitals, with only a handful of cities witnessing daily price changes.
