Mumbai, September 10: Fuel prices remained largely steady across major Indian cities on Thursday, September 10, with petrol and diesel rates showing only marginal movements in select markets. Petrol price in Delhi stood at 102.12 per litre, while diesel was unchanged at 95.20 per litre. Mumbai petrol and diesel prices were 111.21 and 97.83 per litre, respectively, whereas Kolkata recorded petrol at 113.51 and diesel at 99.82 per litre. Thiruvananthapuram was among the cities with the highest petrol and diesel prices at 115.49 and 104.40 per litre, while Chandigarh recorded the lowest rates at 101.54 and 89.47 per litre, respectively. Fuel prices vary across cities based on state taxes and other local charges.

Brent crude held above the $100-a-barrel mark on Thursday as escalating attacks on shipping in the Middle East heightened fears of prolonged disruptions to global oil supplies. Brent futures were down 0.2% at $101 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude rose 0.04% to $96.09 a barrel. Brent has climbed nearly 30% from its early-August lows as the six-month US-Iran conflict continues to disrupt energy flows.

The latest escalation has centred on the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran said it attacked 10 ships on Wednesday after the US sank five Iranian oil tankers. The waterway, which normally handles roughly a fifth of global oil and gas supplies, has seen flows fall sharply amid the conflict, raising concerns that further attacks could keep supplies constrained.

Supply risks are also spreading to alternative export routes. Iran-backed Houthi militants have stepped up attacks on Saudi Arabia, threatening energy infrastructure and crude shipments through the Red Sea. Traders are therefore factoring in a higher geopolitical risk premium, with uncertainty over how much oil can move through the region keeping physical crude markets tight.

The sustained rally has also prompted the US Energy Information Administration to raise its oil price forecasts for this year and next, citing declining global stockpiles following the loss of Middle Eastern supply. For oil-importing economies such as India, a prolonged period of crude prices above $100 could add pressure on inflation, the rupee and corporate margins, while keeping energy stocks in focus.
