June 6, 2025 | Bengaluru: According to recent reports, the Tata Group has been awarded repair operations for iPhones and MacBook devices in India by Apple Inc. This marks a contributing factor to the ongoing business partnership between the Tata Group and Apple Inc., as Apple expands its business operations beyond China.

Tata already assembles iPhones at three facilities in southern India, one of which also manufactures select iPhone components. Now, it has also received the go-ahead to repair iPhones and MacBooks. According to the agreement, Apple’s authorised service centres will continue to handle routine repairs but will now forward more complex issues to Tata’s facility, the report stated.

Apple’s Transition from Wistron to Tata

Currently, Wistron’s Indian subsidiary, ICT Service Management Solutions, handles the after-sales repair services for iPhones and MacBooks in India. However, following this agreement, the Tata Group will assume responsibility for the repair business from ICT Service Management Solutions. The transition is underway and will include complex iPhone and MacBook repairs, which will be conducted from Tata’s Karnataka campus, where an iPhone assembly line is already in place.

India’s Expanding Repair Market

India is the world’s second-largest smartphone market and is witnessing a surge in iPhone sales. According to Counterpoint Research, Apple sold approximately 11 million iPhones in India in 2024, up from just 1% market share in 2020 to 7% now.

Broader Implications for Apple in India

Apple CEO Tim Cook recently noted that a large portion of iPhones sold in the U.S. during the June quarter would be manufactured in India. As geopolitical tensions and tariff concerns persist, India is emerging as a preferred hub for both production and post-sales services.

Apple and Wistron declined to comment on the development, while Tata also refrained from making an official statement.

How Did The Market React?

At around 12:15 PM on June 6th, the Nifty Tata 25 Cap index, which tracks the performance of 25 select Tata Group companies, was up 0.67% or ₹102.15 and was trading at ₹15,448.10.

What’s Next?

The shift to Tata signals Apple’s confidence in the Indian conglomerate’s capabilities and hints at broader plans, including the potential introduction of refurbished Apple device sales in India,  a model Apple already follows in the United States.

The Tata Group’s deeper involvement in Apple’s repair business signals a major shift in India’s role in the global tech supply chain. From assembling iPhones to now repairing both iPhones and MacBooks, Tata is becoming a full-stack partner for Apple in the country.
