Mumbai, August 13: Shares of Tata Motors jumped as much as 5% on Thursday, after the automaker reported a rise in first-quarter profit and said demand is expected to remain firm in the coming quarters. Strong commercial vehicle demand, higher electric vehicle sales and a healthy government order pipeline supported the company’s outlook, while investors also assessed the impact of rising commodity costs on margins.

Tata Motors Q1 Profit Rises

Tata Motors reported an 8.3% year-on-year increase in quarterly profit to 1,528 crore, while revenue from operations rose 23.3% to 19,330 crore.

The performance was supported by higher demand across its commercial vehicle business. Domestic volumes rose 26% year-on-year, while exports increased 35%, reflecting stronger demand in both domestic and international markets.

The company has identified higher-payload trucks, electric vehicles and government orders as key drivers of demand in the coming quarters.

Tata Motors said commercial vehicle demand has remained resilient, helped by improved freight availability, infrastructure activity and the expansion of e-commerce-led logistics.

The company expects these trends to continue supporting the commercial vehicle business. It is also preparing to increase deliveries under a large commercial vehicle order in Indonesia as part of its efforts to expand its international presence.

The positive demand outlook provided a key trigger for the stock’s gains on Thursday, with investors focusing on the potential for stronger volumes to support revenue growth.

EVs, Government Orders Support Outlook

Electric vehicles are another important growth driver for Tata Motors. Government orders are expected to provide additional visibility for commercial vehicle demand.

Higher-payload trucks are also expected to benefit from demand across sectors linked to infrastructure, logistics and transportation.

The combination of these factors has helped Tata Motors maintain a positive outlook despite a challenging cost environment.

Rising Commodity Costs Remain A Concern

The strong operational outlook is being partly offset by higher input costs. Rising prices of aluminium and steel, exacerbated by the Middle East crisis, have increased pressure on the company’s margins.

Tata Motors has already raised vehicle prices twice since April and plans further pricing actions along with cost-control measures to offset commodity inflation.

Its core profitability margin narrowed by 60 basis points to 11.7% during the quarter, highlighting the pressure that higher raw material costs are placing on earnings.

Tata Motors Steps Up Cost Control

The automaker is looking to protect profitability through a combination of price increases, cost reductions and operational efficiencies. It also plans targeted measures to ease supply constraints during the second quarter.

The ability to pass on higher input costs without hurting demand will be closely watched by investors, particularly as the company seeks to maintain volume growth across its commercial vehicle businesses.

Stock Outlook In Focus

Tata Motors’ shares have responded positively to the combination of stronger quarterly earnings and a firm demand outlook. The stock’s 5% intraday jump on Thursday reflects renewed investor interest following the results.

Going forward, investors will track commercial vehicle volumes, EV demand, pricing actions and commodity costs. Sustained demand growth, combined with successful cost-control measures, could help Tata Motors offset margin pressures and maintain its earnings momentum through the remainder of FY27.

At the same time, persistent commodity inflation and geopolitical uncertainty remain key risks to profitability.
