Mumbai, September 17: Indian sectoral indices ended largely higher on Thursday, with realty and pharma stocks leading the gains. Auto, metals and media stocks also advanced, while banking indices remained under pressure and limited gains in the benchmark indices.

The Nifty Realty index was among the top sectoral gainers, rising 1.4 percent. Pharma stocks gained 1.7 percent, extending support to the broader market as investors picked up shares across several domestic-facing sectors.

The Nifty Media index climbed 1.2 percent, while auto and metal indices advanced around 1 percent each. Infrastructure stocks also remained firm, adding to the broad-based nature of the day’s gains.

Realty, Pharma Gain

The Nifty Realty index was among the top sectoral performers as investors stepped up buying in real estate stocks. DLF rose 2.8%, Lodha Developers advanced 1.4%, and Oberoi Realty rose 2%.

Pharma was another major sectoral gainer. Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories rose 3% while Laurus Labs advanced 2.2%.

Auto Stocks Extend Recovery

The Nifty Auto index gained 1 percent on Thursday, taking its advance over the past two sessions to 1.5 percent. The index had fallen nearly 4 percent over the preceding four trading sessions.

Tata group stocks were among the notable movers within the sector and across the broader market. Tata Motors PV, Tata Motors, Tata Steel and Tata Investment Corporation rose between 2.3 percent and 5.5 percent.

The buying interest in Tata group counters came after reports that the Tata Sons board had approved a fresh five-year term for N Chandrasekaran as executive chairman. TVS Motor Company, which rolled out updates for its bikes ahead of the festive season, rose 1.70%.

Metals, Media Stocks Gain

Metal stocks advanced around 1 percent, adding to the day’s gains as investors returned to cyclical counters. Tata Steel gained 2.3% after the Tata Sons board had reportedly approved a fresh five-year term for N Chandrasekaran as executive chairman. Hindalco Industries rose 0.8%.

Media stocks also remained in demand, with the sector rising 1.2 percent. Ranbir Kapoor backed Prime Focus rose for the third session, up 4.5%.

The gains across metals, autos and realty helped offset weakness in financial stocks and kept the broader market in positive territory.

Banking Stocks Underperform

Banking indices were among the key laggards on Thursday, declining after the US central bank raised rates. The Nifty Bank index ended lower, while both private-sector and PSU banking stocks remained under pressure. Private sector lender ICICI Bank fell 0.8% while State Bank of India declined 0.3%.

The weakness in banks acted as a drag on the frontline benchmarks even as several other sectors posted strong gains. The divergence between financials and domestic-facing sectors was reflected in the mixed performance of the Sensex and Nifty after the Closing Auction Session.

Broader Market Remains Firm

The sectoral gains were accompanied by stronger performance in the broader market. The Nifty Midcap 100 rose 0.9 percent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 0.8 percent.

Market breadth was firmly positive, with 2,480 stocks advancing against 1,487 declines. India VIX also fell nearly 8 percent, pointing to a sharp decline in the market’s volatility gauge.

Overall, Thursday’s sectoral action was led by realty and pharma, with auto, metals and media also contributing to the market’s gains. Banking stocks remained the key area of weakness, while broader-market participation and positive breadth supported the overall market despite the mixed finish in the headline indices.
