Vodafone Idea filed a fresh petition in Supreme Court today, 15th May 2025, seeking Rs 30,000 crore waiver on its Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues. This Rs 30,000 crore consists of payment for interest, penalties and interest on penalties on its AGR dues. The Supreme Court has scheduled the hearing on this plea for 19th May. Total AGR dues of Vodafone Idea currently stand at Rs 80,000 crore.
The Company Says Its Survival Is Crucial For Maintaining Competition
The company in its petition has argued that its survival depends on the relief sought in the plea. It also added that its survival is necessary for maintaining competition in the telecom services industry. Currently the three main players in the telecom services industry in India are Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. If Vodafone Idea ceases to exist then the industry will virtually turn into a duopoly. Such a duopoly may not be in the interest of Indian consumers.
What Are AGR Dues?
AGR dues refer to the percentage of their revenues that mobile service companies have to pay to the government as license fee for using the spectrums allotted to them. Earlier, telecom companies used to calculate the fee that they have to pay to the government based on their revenues from providing basic telecom services. But then Department of Telecommunications (DoT) asked companies to calculate its fee based on all their revenues and not just from revenues earned from providing basic telecom services. The Supreme Court ultimately ruled in favor of DoT in a 2019 judgement.
At 3:20 p.m. India time on 15th May, 2025, Vodafone Idea’s stock price was up 3.58% at Rs 7.23. At this time, Nifty 50 index was up by 387.60 points or 1.57%. 52-week high price of the stock currently is Rs 19.18.
