How Does Holding Duration Affect HDFC Sky MTF Interest Costs?

Holding shares through a Margin Trading Facility (MTF) involves borrowing part of the purchase amount from a broker. On HDFC SKY, the T+999 feature allows eligible positions to remain open for an extended period, subject to applicable conditions. However, a longer holding period can increase borrowing costs. Understanding the interest rate, daily calculations, and tenure rules helps investors assess how time affects the total cost of an MTF position.
What Does the T+999 Holding Feature Mean?
HDFC SKY allows eligible MTF positions to remain open for up to T+999 days, subject to applicable terms. Positions may face automatic square-off after the permitted tenure or if corporate actions or changes in stock eligibility trigger it.
Investors can close positions earlier or convert them to delivery by meeting the applicable requirements. However, interest continues to accrue on the outstanding funded amount, so longer holding periods can increase borrowing costs.
How Does HDFC SKY Calculate MTF Interest?
HDFC SKY’s published MTF pricing lists an interest rate of 1% per month, or 12% per annum, on the funded amount. The funded amount is the portion of the purchase value that the broker finances.
Consider an illustrative purchase of shares worth ₹1,00,000. The investor contributes ₹25,000, while HDFC SKY funds the remaining ₹75,000.
Using an assumed annual rate of 12%, the estimated daily interest works out as follows:
Daily interest = Funded amount × Annual interest rate ÷ 365
₹75,000 × 12% ÷ 365 = approximately ₹24.66 per day.
At the stated monthly rate of 1%, interest on ₹75,000 equals ₹750 for a month. The daily estimate and monthly figure use different calculation bases, so they may not match exactly. Actual charges depend on the applicable pricing and interest calculation terms.

How Does Holding Duration Change the Interest Cost?
The longer the broker-funded amount remains outstanding, the more interest can accumulate. The following illustration shows how duration affects costs when the borrowing and annual rate remain unchanged.
|
Holding period |
Approximate interest |
| 5 calendar days |
₹123.29 |
|
15 calendar days |
₹369.86 |
| 30 calendar days |
₹739.73 |
|
999 calendar days |
₹24,632.88 |
These estimates use simple daily accrual at 12% per annum, calculated on a 365-day basis. They assume that the investor keeps the full ₹75,000 outstanding throughout each period.
Important: The 999-day figure represents a hypothetical calendar-day calculation. It does not estimate the cost of the full T+999 trading-day tenure. Trading days and calendar days differ, and actual charges depend on the applicable interest terms and account activity.
The table illustrates one principle: holding duration affects total borrowing costs even when the funded amount and interest rate stay constant.
How Do Interest Costs Affect the Overall Outcome?
Interest reduces the net financial result of an MTF position. Investors also incur applicable brokerage, taxes, and other transaction charges. Therefore, a share-price gain does not automatically translate into an equivalent net profit.
Consider three possible outcomes:
- Share price rises
The gain must cover interest and other applicable costs before the investor records a net profit. - Share price remains unchanged
Interest and other charges can reduce the position’s overall value to the investor. - Share price falls
The investor faces a market loss while borrowing costs may continue to accumulate.
These examples illustrate why holding duration matters beyond the share price alone. The final result depends on the market value of the position, the outstanding borrowing, and the charges incurred during the holding period.
How Do Margin Requirements and Early Conversion Affect Holding Duration?
The T+999 feature does not remove the requirement to maintain the applicable margin. If a price decline reduces the available margin below the required level, the investor may need to provide additional funds. HDFC SKY may also take action under its applicable square-off rules.
Investors can convert an eligible MTF position to delivery through the platform, subject to the required funds and applicable procedures. Once the investor fully repays the broker-funded amount, interest on that repaid amount stops accruing. Any remaining borrowing can continue to attract interest.
Investors can review the interest charged on their positions through HDFC SKY’s MTF Interest Report. This report helps them examine actual charges rather than relying only on illustrative calculations.
Conclusion
HDFC SKY’s T+999 feature permits eligible MTF positions to remain open for an extended period, subject to applicable conditions. However, longer borrowing periods can increase cumulative interest costs. The actual expense depends on the outstanding funded amount, the applicable rate, and the time the borrowing remains unpaid.
