Sept 9: Apple’s (AAPL) common stock ended Wednesday’s regular session at $315.34, down $0.88, or 0.28 per cent. The stock, listed on the Nasdaq and part of the Nasdaq 100, has traded within a 52-week range of $225.95 to $344.57, with Wednesday’s close still well above the midpoint of that band. Volume for the session came in at 65,640,320 shares, broadly in line with recent trading activity even as the stock swung sharply through the day.

How The Stock Ended on Wednesday

Apple’s shares opened little changed from Tuesday’s close before drifting steadily lower through the morning, based on the stock’s intraday chart. The decline deepened around midday, with the stock briefly touching levels near $310 in early afternoon trade, its weakest point of the session. From there, the stock staged a steady recovery through the afternoon, clawing back most of its midday losses to finish the regular session at $315.34, down a modest 0.28 per cent on the day. The stock then extended those gains into after-hours trading, moving back above the $316 mark as investors continued digesting the day’s biggest headline out of Cupertino.

Apple Unveils the Duo, Its Answer to the Foldable Phone Race

Apple on Wednesday redefined its flagship smartphone with the launch of the Duo, a folding $1,999 iPhone, betting its design and promises of data privacy will let it leap ahead of rivals who have been selling folding phones for years. The Duo could shake up a category long dominated by Samsung and Chinese companies like Huawei, whose devices have struggled to move beyond a niche audience. Analysts have long said Apple’s entry could be the catalyst foldables need, helping bring the form factor into the mainstream much as the company did with smartwatches and wireless earbuds.

The Duo is sized and shaped like a passport, with rounded edges, according to Reuters. It opens into a horizontal, 7.6-inch-diagonal (19 cm) screen that also can be viewed vertically. There is a smaller single screen on the front, when the phone is folded. When open, it is Apple’s thinnest phone, the company said. However, it is thicker than folding phones offered by Chinese rivals.

A Bet on Design, Privacy and the Next Iteration of the iPhone

New CEO John Ternus led the event, for the most notable overhaul of Apple’s flagship product since the iPhone X in 2017. The iPhone brought in $209.6 billion, or just over half of Apple’s sales, in its most recent fiscal year, underscoring just how much rides on the smartphone line’s ability to keep evolving. Ternus criticized existing foldables as awkward and poorly suited for common tasks such as scrolling and video viewing, saying the Duo was designed to deliver an iPad-like experience in a pocket-sized device through a custom hinge, dual displays with a consistent aspect ratio, and a new titanium body.

Competition and Market Reaction

Wednesday’s session captured that tension well: shares fell through much of the day, in line with a broader pattern of investors selling into major Apple product launches before details are fully digested, before recovering as the market appeared to warm to the Duo’s positioning against established foldable players. Samsung has sold folding phones since 2019, while Huawei and other Chinese manufacturers have built up a loyal, if limited, following in that category. Apple’s pitch — leaning on its privacy credentials and design language rather than being first to market — mirrors the approach that helped the Apple Watch and AirPods eventually come to dominate categories they entered years after rivals.

Broader Market Cues

Apple’s stock move on Wednesday came against a broadly steady backdrop for large-cap technology shares, with the swing in AAPL standing out more for its intraday volatility than for any dramatic shift in overall sentiment toward the sector. The stock’s after-hours strength, pushing shares back above where they closed a day earlier, suggested that at least some investors view the Duo as a credible attempt to reinvigorate iPhone sales growth, which has moderated in recent years as the smartphone market has matured globally.

Outlook

With the Duo not expected to ship for several more weeks, investors will be watching pre-order data and early reviews closely for signs of how much genuine demand exists for a $1,999 device in a category that has so far struggled to break into the mainstream. Analysts will also be parsing whether the Duo’s thicker profile compared with Chinese rivals proves to be a meaningful drawback for consumers or a worthwhile trade-off for Apple’s broader ecosystem and software polish. For now, Wednesday’s choppy but ultimately resilient session suggests the market is willing to give Apple the benefit of the doubt on its biggest iPhone redesign in nearly a decade.
