Mumbai, September 9: Crude oil prices extended their gains for a fourth straight session on Wednesday, with Brent crude moving closer to the crucial $100-a-barrel mark as renewed military strikes in the Middle East heightened concerns over disruptions to global energy supplies. The rally has added to worries about inflation, interest rates and the outlook for major oil-importing economies such as India.

Brent crude futures rose 1.6% to $99.5 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude was also up 1.6% at $94.5 a barrel. Brent has gained roughly a quarter since early August as hopes of a lasting resolution to the six-month-old conflict have faded and fighting has intensified across the region.

Middle East Conflict Keeps Oil Markets On Edge

The latest move higher in crude came after the conflict escalated on Tuesday, with Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen launching attacks on several Saudi cities. The developments have brought Saudi Arabia, a key US ally and one of the world’s largest oil producers, deeper into the conflict and raised concerns over the security of regional energy infrastructure.

The United States also struck several Iranian oil tankers, while Iran targeted a US military base in Jordan, according to the Reuters report. The fresh exchanges have further diminished hopes for an imminent resumption of peace talks and prompted traders to build a larger geopolitical risk premium into crude prices.

The latest attacks come after weeks of disruption to energy infrastructure and important shipping routes in the Middle East. Analysts said the risk to supplies has increased as the conflict spreads, particularly if attacks on Saudi Arabia persist.

Supply Disruption Fears Intensify

Saudi Arabia has already diverted some crude exports away from the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil shipments. Any sustained attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure could make it increasingly difficult for the kingdom to maintain crude flows to international markets.

The threat has added another layer of uncertainty for oil traders, who are already assessing the impact of disruptions caused by attacks on regional energy facilities and shipping lanes. Analysts said attacks on Saudi energy facilities, followed by the destruction of five Iranian tankers, had raised concerns about another prolonged disruption to global oil supplies.

With Brent now only marginally below $100 a barrel, traders are closely watching whether the benchmark can sustain its move above that level. A prolonged period of elevated prices could have wider implications for inflation and economic growth, particularly if higher crude prices feed into transportation, manufacturing and consumer costs.

What Higher Oil Prices Mean For India

The surge in crude prices is particularly significant for India, which relies heavily on imports to meet its oil requirements. A sustained rise in international crude prices could increase the country’s import bill, put pressure on the rupee and widen the trade deficit.

Higher oil prices can also raise input costs for several industries, potentially squeezing corporate margins. Aviation, paints, chemicals, logistics and other fuel-intensive sectors could face greater pressure if crude remains elevated for an extended period.

For consumers, the impact will depend on how much of the increase in international crude prices is passed through into domestic fuel prices. Higher fuel costs can also have second-round effects by increasing transportation expenses and raising the cost of goods and services.

Inflation And Interest Rates In Focus

The oil rally is also complicating the global inflation and interest-rate outlook. A sustained jump in energy prices could make it harder for central banks to ease monetary policy if higher fuel costs begin feeding into broader inflation.

For investors, this creates an additional source of uncertainty at a time when markets are already closely tracking central-bank policy and economic data. Rising crude prices can simultaneously weigh on equities and bonds while supporting energy-related assets.

The immediate focus, however, remains on the Middle East. With Brent approaching the $100-a-barrel threshold, further escalation could push the risk premium higher and keep oil markets volatile.

For India, therefore, crude prices are likely to remain a critical market trigger, with the direction of oil potentially influencing the rupee, inflation expectations, sectoral performance and overall investor sentiment in the near term.
