Mumbai, Aug 17: Indian equity benchmarks declined at Monday’s open, extending Friday’s losses. The Sensex shed 271 points, the Nifty slipped below 24,350. Banking, financials and IT led the decline, while auto, media and pharma held up.

The US remains locked in a campaign to denuclearize Iran, and that has kept crude elevated for weeks — a direct hit for import-dependent India, where pricier oil means a wider current account gap, a weaker rupee and squeezed margins.

The conflict’s reach is widening too: Trump announced over the weekend that Washington would scale back military drills with South Korea, citing his rapport with Kim Jong Un and Seoul’s refusal to back the Iran campaign. None of this touches India directly, but in a market already bruised by FII outflows, every fresh geopolitical thread adds to the caution.

Overnight cues offered no relief. Wall Street closed mostly lower Friday: Dow, Nasdaq and S&P 500 all in the red. Asian markets were split Monday morning, Hong Kong and Jakarta up, Australia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand down. Gift Nifty had flagged the soft start hours earlier, and the cash open confirmed it.

The Sensex was trading at 77,737.89, down 271.36 points or 0.35%, as of 9:29 am IST on Monday, August 17. The Nifty stood at 24,304.50, lower by 61.50 points or 0.25%, as of 9:28 am IST the same day.

The selling was broad, not concentrated. PSU banks bore the brunt on rate and risk sensitivity; IT extended its slide on a stronger dollar and weak US tech commentary. Auto, media and pharma bucked the trend on stock-specific triggers rather than any sector-wide tailwind.

FIIs, net sellers through most of August, remain the key swing factor. Whether domestic institutional buying steps in again — as it has on past down days — will decide how much of the early damage holds. India VIX ticked higher, pointing to a choppy session ahead, with crude and Middle East headlines likely to matter more than the earnings season, which has largely played out.

Gainers and Losers

Among the top gainers on the Nifty, Eicher Motors (EICHERMOT) led the pack, rising 1.15% to an LTP of Rs 8,159.5 from a previous close of Rs 8,066.5, followed by Hindalco Industries (HINDALCO), up 1.01% to Rs 1,039.9 against a prior close of Rs 1,029.5. Eternal (ETERNAL) gained 0.63% to trade at Rs 320.5 versus its previous close of Rs 318.5, while Bajaj Auto (BAJAJ-AUTO) added 0.41% to reach Rs 11,748 from a previous close of Rs 11,700, and Bharat Electronics (BEL) rounded out the top five with a 0.32% gain to Rs 412.1 against a prior close of Rs 410.8.

On the losing side, JSW Steel (JSWSTEEL) was the steepest decliner, down 1.35% to an LTP of Rs 1,252.8 from a previous close of Rs 1,270, followed by Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (DRREDDY), which fell 1.22% to Rs 1,185.4 against a prior close of Rs 1,200. State Bank of India (SBIN) slipped 1.06% to Rs 1,056.4 from a previous close of Rs 1,067.7, Jio Financial Services (JIOFIN) also declined 1.06% to Rs 246.4 versus its prior close of Rs 249.05, and Wipro (WIPRO) rounded out the top five losers, down 0.94% to Rs 182.27 from a previous close of Rs 184.

Broad Market and Sectoral Indices

Breadth across the broad market space stayed negative through the morning, with every major broad-market gauge trading in the red, though the degree of weakness varied. The Nifty Smallcap 100 was the most resilient, down just 0.11%, followed by the Nifty Microcap 250, off 0.15%, and the Nifty Smallcap 500, down 0.17%, suggesting relatively shallower cuts at the smaller end of the market. At the other end, the Nifty Midcap Select and Nifty Midcap 100 were the weakest broad indices, both down 0.35%, followed closely by the Nifty Midcap 50, which slipped 0.30%, indicating that midcap stocks bore a disproportionate share of the selling pressure.

Sectoral indices told a more mixed story: the Nifty Media index was the standout gainer, up 0.80%, followed by the Nifty Auto index, up 0.52%, and the Nifty Chemicals index, which added 0.23%. On the downside, the Nifty PSU Bank index led sectoral losses with a 1.18% decline, followed by the Nifty IT index, down 0.76%, and the Nifty Bank index, which slipped 0.47% as financials remained under pressure through the session.

Asian Markets

Asian markets were mixed on Monday morning, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and Jakarta’s JSX Composite posting solid gains of 1.58% and 1.59% respectively, while China’s Shanghai Composite added a more modest 0.44%. Japan’s Nikkei 225 was nearly flat, edging up just 0.01%, offering little directional cue for the region. On the downside, Vietnam’s HNX30, Malaysia’s KLCI, Thailand’s SET Index and Australia’s All Ordinaries all slipped, underscoring the lack of a unified regional trend.

US Markets

Wall Street ended mostly lower on Friday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.20% to 53,732.41 and the Nasdaq Composite falling 0.28% to 26,729.16. The S&P 500 also closed in the red, slipping 0.17% to 7,785.76, while the NYSE Composite was the lone bright spot among major US gauges, edging up 0.05%. The weak close reinforced cautious sentiment heading into the new trading week across global markets, including India.

Oil Prices

Crude oil held at elevated levels on Monday morning, with WTI Crude trading at $82.59 a barrel, up 0.23%, and Brent Crude at $88.96, up 0.50%, both continuing to reflect ongoing Middle East risk. Natural gas was a notable outlier, falling 2.63% to $2.661, even as most other energy benchmarks stayed firm. Brent has been hovering close to $87-89 a barrel through the past week and remains on track for a strong weekly gain, keeping the pressure on oil-importing economies like India.

Middle East Conflict

The United States remains engaged in a campaign aimed at the denuclearization of the Islamic Republic of Iran, a conflict that continues to keep global crude oil prices elevated and weigh on risk sentiment across markets. President Trump has pressed allies to contribute to the effort, including a direct request to South Korea that Seoul declined, prompting the US to scale back its joint military exercises with Seoul. North Korea’s Kim Jong Un has pointed to the ongoing US-Iran standoff as vindication for his country’s decision to retain its own nuclear arsenal. For markets, it is the sheer persistence of the conflict — rather than any single dramatic escalation — that continues to keep energy prices and global risk appetite on edge.

Indian Markets — Friday’s Close

The Sensex and Nifty ended lower on Friday after a volatile session, with the Sensex slipping 70.71 points, or 0.09%, to close at 78,009.25, while the Nifty 50 declined 29.85 points, or 0.12%, to settle at 24,366. Selling in auto, energy, FMCG, metal, pharma and realty stocks offset gains in consumer durables and media shares, and market breadth remained weak, with 2,244 stocks declining against 1,855 advancing.
