Mumbai, July 30: Indian equity markets ended higher on Thursday, with the Nifty 50 and Sensex gaining 0.28% and 0.35%, respectively, as buying in automobile stocks helped the benchmarks overcome a cautious global backdrop. However, the broader market remained under pressure, with mid- and small-cap stocks declining and market breadth turning negative.
The Nifty Auto index emerged as the day’s top sectoral performer, climbing 1.6%, while the Nifty Realty index plunged 2%. The IT index also extended its recent rally, while oil-sensitive sectors remained in focus as crude prices hovered near elevated levels amid ongoing Middle East tensions. Overall gains were capped by uncertainty over the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook and concerns over the impact of higher oil prices on inflation.
Auto Stocks Rev Up As M&M, Eicher Motors, Maruti Gain
Automobile stocks led the market’s sectoral advance, with the Nifty Auto index rising 1.6%.
Mahindra & Mahindra was among the top Nifty gainers, climbing around 2%, while Eicher Motors and Maruti Suzuki also advanced. Tyre maker Balkrishna Industries was the standout performer in the broader auto space, surging 10.8% after encouraging results.
The sector remained supported by positive stock-specific developments and expectations of resilient domestic demand. Eicher Motors gained after the Royal Enfield maker reported a better-than-expected June-quarter profit, helped by strong domestic motorcycle demand.
Mahindra & Mahindra rose after announcing that it aims to double EV capacity and reporting a rise in profit, while Maruti Suzuki India rose 1.7%.
IT Extends Rally As AI Selloff Drives Rotation
The Nifty IT index edged up 0.2%, extending its gains for the week to around 8.4%. The sector has benefited from a rotation towards Indian IT services stocks as the AI-driven technology rally in the U.S. and parts of Asia has begun to unwind.
The correction in global semiconductor and AI-linked stocks has encouraged investors to reassess valuations across the technology space. Indian IT majors, which have relatively limited direct exposure to the AI infrastructure trade, have emerged as potential beneficiaries of the shift in investor positioning.
The Nifty IT index is also on course for its strongest monthly performance in six years, with gains of around 18.6% in July. Wipro and Tech Mahindra both rose 1.5% each. Infosys flatlined while TCS declined 0.6%, capping gains for the sector today.
Realty Stocks Under Pressure
Real estate stocks emerged as the biggest drag among sectoral indices, with the Nifty Realty index falling 2%. Prestige Estates Projects fell 4.7% after results as profit declined 13%. DLF fell 2.3% while Brigade Enterprises managed to buck the trend, edging up 0.15%.
The sectoral decline came amid a broader cautious approach towards the wider market, with investors booking profits in several mid- and small-cap stocks. The Nifty Midcap index fell 0.4%, while the Nifty Smallcap index declined 0.6%.
The underperformance of the broader market contrasted with gains in the frontline indices, highlighting the selective nature of buying during Thursday’s session.
Oil, Fed Uncertainty Keep Investors Cautious
The broader market remained sensitive to movements in crude oil prices and the global interest-rate outlook.
Oil prices rose around 0.3% to nearly $91 a barrel, as Middle East tensions continued to raise concerns over potential disruptions to global energy supplies. Higher crude prices could add to India’s import bill and inflationary pressures, creating a potential headwind for the domestic economy and equities.
Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve’s decision to keep interest rates unchanged was accompanied by dissent from three policymakers, adding uncertainty over the future direction of U.S. monetary policy. The hawkish undertone has raised concerns that interest rates could remain elevated for longer, potentially affecting global capital flows towards emerging markets.
Pharma, FMCG Indices Edge Down
The pharmaceutical index on NSE edged down 0.1% amid selective buying, with Sun Pharma gaining after receiving regulatory approval for semaglutide injection in Brazil.
In contrast, Dabur India declined after its quarterly results as the FMCG index, too, edged down 0.1%.
The mixed performance across defensive sectors highlighted the stock-specific nature of the session, with investors continuing to favour companies with strong earnings visibility and positive corporate developments.
Sectoral Outlook Remains Stock-Specific
Overall, Thursday’s session reflected a divergence between the headline indices and the broader market. While autos and IT stocks helped lift the benchmarks, weakness in realty and broader-market stocks kept sentiment cautious.
The market’s near-term direction is likely to remain dependent on global interest-rate signals, crude oil prices, foreign fund flows and the ongoing June-quarter earnings season. With the Fed’s policy outlook unclear and geopolitical risks continuing to influence energy prices, investors are likely to remain selective, favouring sectors and stocks with strong earnings visibility and resilient domestic demand.
